AMD just doesn't has the market share it makes no sense to optimize for them beyond "good enough" which is "make it run 60 FPS 1080p at decent but not max settings"

 

For AMD to turn the tide they need to move more units and then maybe you'll see Ryzen optimizations reach a small niche of games much like Radeon optimized games that are around which are still a minority but one potentially worth considering when purchasing hardware.

I agree, it's possible that only a handful of games receive those updates, I'm not saying it's objectively a good thing that Ryzen can get such a performance boost from a patch cause it shouldn't require it in the first place...

 

Ryzen's performance in games is satisfactory as it is already for an average user considering its price and multithreaded capabilities, to see a real difference between a 7700K/6900K and 1800X you need an overkill graphics card for a relatively low resolution (ex. Titan XP at 1080p) cause that's how most (good) CPU benchmarks are, though that's not accurate for an "average consumer"...

I own and played the game...it's rather good actually.

 

Although I haven't had the time to sit and play to finish it. Sadly haven't had the chance to finish a game since early 2016, and that was the Division. Then again, very little to finish

Up until a while ago I was under the impression that AotS was just a tech benchmark. I didn't realise that it is actually a game.

Faster memory has always affected Intel processors to a significant degree. The only reason why people are bringing it up with Ryzen is because AMD fanboys are trying to present it in the best possible light. That and the "future optimisations" (although judging from this, it's true to some degree).

Ram for Ryzen has always been a factor but the gains being shown is directly from the update. Yes if you use faster ram you get increased performance which is shown on the graph, just look the the blue bars exclusively. The orange bars shows the performance after the patch with an identical configuration, the only difference is the game patch so that is where the gains are coming from.

 

I can see where you are coming from as the game patch has allowed the faster ram to improve the performance even more than it would have otherwise, mostly in the high preset test, but that still only remains possible from the game optimizations in the patch.

The majority of those games are not RTS games where CPU performance is very critical and minor improvements are much more apparent. Also 70% of my 300 steam games are RTS and TBS games so I care a lot about these types of gains being shown, I even went with a X79 system for the extra cores due to the types of games I play that can and do use those 2 extra cores.

 

Agreed for your more typical games there is likely no way we are going to see ~30% performance gains from game optimizations.

Which is a good reason some places have started testing all CPUs at around 3200Mhz standard. Digital Foundry are good for it.

 

One thing to note though is that The Witcher 3 is a significantly outlier compared to the vast majority of other games. Where as Ryzen not only gets the improvements similar to Intel from RAM speed, but they seem to get that extra bit as well that we've been seeing since the Infinity Fabric runs faster.

 

In that same video there were cases where going from 2666Mhz to 3200Mhz is barely 3-6fps.

 

GTA V 4 FPS difference

Assassins's Creed 2 FPS difference ( 4fps for 2133 vs 3200 )

Far Cry 4  6 FPS difference

Crysis 3 3 FPS difference ( 3 fps for 2133 vs 3200 )

COD Advanced Warfare 9 FPS Difference

Battlefield 4 2 FPS difference ( 7 fps for 2133 vs 3200 )

Shadow of Mordor 2 FPS difference ( 3 fps for 2133 vs 3200 )

I certainly want more places to test the impact of memory on Ryzen. Especially when compared to Intel. Until then we know there are improvements for both sides. Although we can't say for sure if Ryzen is certainly impacted more.

Been saying it for a while, that faster memory can help relieve CPU bottlenecks. This wasn't only true for Ryzen - this was also true with previous Intel architectures. I experimented with this idea myself with my 2500k and going from 1600Mhz to 2133Mhz memory. My minimum frame rate increased in games like Witcher 3. I also ended up getting a good job sometime after I did this but haters will say there's no connection.

 

Yet sometimes when I mention memory speeds potentially holding a CPU back in certain applications, someone almost always links that one video Linus did like 6 years ago or something.

Yeah, I've seen those tests ^^ PurePC is one of the biggest tech sites here in Poland  but their initial Ryzen review was garbage, they got results on par with i3-7350K in most games

 

I'm gonna conduct my own tests of my 6700K with 2133MHz RAM and 3200MHz RAM and check out the difference in avg fps with Fraps, I'm in the process of creating a video of how games perform on my setup as quite a few people asked about how an R9 Fury performs nowadays when it dropped in price so I can add a few benches of different RAM speeds on Intel CPUs

Yeah, lots of initial reviews were bad in general though. Most of it due to unfinished motherboard firmware and drivers. 

The massive variance between review results were astounding.

 

Should be interesting to see your results; I hope you get some very modern games in there as well to compare and contrast with the older ones.

My Fury X died recently when some VRAM went bad, but I must say after putting in a 980Ti, the performance is pretty much the same except for some outliers. 

I'm missing FreeSync though.

 

I'm still stuck on 2400Mhz RAM for my x99 Deluxe. Although it took Asus nearly 6 months before a BIOS update allowed me to run it over 2133Mhz as well from it's launch.

Atleast with Ryzen they've picked up the pace for fixing these issues.

Awesome, i believe in some months time when everything is ironed out for Ryzen, it will be really nice + setting the ground for Zen+ to release much smoother.

Also I can testify that Ram speeds play a huge role on games I have 8 gb Corsair vengeance pro 2400mhz DDR3 and at the Time when Fallout 4 launched i compared my system (with an R9 290 at the time) an identical one with 8 gb 1600ish mhz ram and the slower ram system was stuttering and getting lower FPS in general , thats just one example I've seen this behaviour in a lot of games since then.

To say RAM speeds don't give any FPS gain is wrong now days. It might of been true in DDR2 and DDR3 days when linus made a video on it. But when you have RAM that is clocked the same or faster than your CPU it matter.

Well it already is if you consider the R5 upcoming ones.
Considering the FPS to price difference the 1400 and 1500X 4c/8t are going to be fantastic processors, even if they're that 7% slower than the i5 7400K-7600

Could be the Chips Raja meant when he said his goal for 2017 is $1000 4K gaming for consumers.

The pre-update benchmarks were nearly identical becoming a nearly 7 fps gap afterwards.

 

It seems likely many games have other issues with ryzen that have been overshadowing the performance delta from ram speeds. Leading people to dismiss the effect of ram speed. Hopefully we'll see more games gain this level of improvement as ryzen5/3 rolls out.
