ZTE was charged 1.2 billion dollars for breaking US sanctions

So as you know, people in Iran and North Korea are having rough times with all the wars and sactions. But, they do need to communicate, so they have to rely on cheap but good phones.

 

So ZTE tried to help them out, but, they have one roadblock: US sanctions. 

Since they do have to make money, they decided to illegaly sell them. US law forces found that out and charged ZTE a whopping 1.2$ billion fine, making it the largest of its kind.

 

According to the United States Department of Commerce, from 2010 to 2016 ZTE “conspired to evade” America’s embargo against Iran. The Chinese firm sold US-made hardware and software to the country to supply its telecommunications infrastructure. ZTE is also charged with making 283 shipments of equipment (including servers and routers) to North Korea, which is also under US trade embargoes.

They don't need to sell to such nations. They make more than enough money without them.

They wouldn't do that. Why on earth would they? They hold the the 4th largest market share of cellular devices in the US, and this year they plan to release a flagship priced device. Even if they only sold 1.5m units (they sold 15m units last year, with a 30% growth) that almost pays for the sanction right there. That's just in phones, not to mention infrastructure.

Well yes, technically anyone can impose sanctions on anyone. They just need to be able to enforce them. In this case as ZTE wants to sell its products in the US, there is an enforcement mechanism.

Being a dictator is not enough for a country to get sanctions placed on them. They have sanctions on them because these are countries where their leaders have been trying to get nuclear weapons and have vowed to use them. North Korea already has them, but they don't have a delivery system.

Sanctions are placed on such countries because, as you said, it undermimes the dictator, but more importantly it cripples their economy which in turn hinders them from getting nuclear weapons. To conduct the research needed or buy the materials needed, you need money. See where this is going? ZTE selling in North Korea means they have to pay taxes to North Korea, which.....do I have to hold your hand here too? Your joke was guiding missiles with an android phone was dumb shows you know little more about this issue than a 5th grader.

 

You were partly right on the Cuba issue, in that the sanctions went on for too long, but they were put there in 1st place for a good reason. In Iran, we had to revise them since they had acquired thousands of centrifuges which is why we got the Iran deal. We eased up the sanctions on the condition that we come in and inspect with no restrictions at any time we suspect they may be engaging in research for nuclear weapons.

 

Since you think they don't work, tell me, when was the last time you heard a nuclear weapon was detonated? You think your average empathetic human being likes the effect that sanctions have on the people living in those countries? Or do you actually not know what happens when a nuclear weapon is detonated?

I'm all for grey areas, but forced labour camps where entire families are put on life sentences when even a single member voices dissent(including any descendants that may be born while imprisoned) is pure and objective evil. 

 

As for the effect of sanctions on technology, yes regimes like North Korea will use even the most basic tools for their weapons programs and even something as simple as a smartphone already has technologies that can be useful in weapons programs(miniaturized computers, guidance and global positioning, etc.)

I know about their nuclear tests. I specifically said NK doesn't have a delivery system. And I was taking about the last time a nuke was used against someone.

No, you literally asked when the last time a nuclear weapon was detonated. It doesn't really matter if it was a test or not as it's still a weapon. I was under the impression that the sanctions were supposed to prevent NK from even getting that far in development.
