Unsigned code can already be run on the Nintendo Switch

It appears that the not-so-well hidden Nintendo Switch browser shipped with a bunch of old vulnerabilities that hackers were able to leverage. Yesterday, hacker qwertyoruiop (known for Jailbreaks of multiple iOS versions, and who also contributed to the PS4 1.76 Jailbreak) posted a screenshot of what seems to be a Webkit exploit running on the Nintendo Switch.

According to the hacker, “all” he had to do was slightly tweak his existing jailbreakMe iOS Webkit exploit (hence the mention of iOS and pangu in the screenshot) and remove iOS specific code from it. Although qwertyoruiop has not provided any proof or release besides a screenshot, the hacker’s reputation makes it highly unlikely to be a hoax (I do not have access to the hack or a Nintendo Switch here to verify.

 

Before people start going off about piracy and such, it is still a long way off from kernel access which is the main hurdle that needs to be met. Still, shipping with a browser that is vulnerable to old exploits isn't helpful in dispelling the somewhat rushed feel of the Switch that the online community is harping on about, just potentially adding more to the fire with the existing Joy-Con connectivity issues, the easily stuck wrist straps, screen scratches from the dock etc.

Title is very misleading.

 

The hacker ran a WebKit exploit attack on the Switch from his laptop, AFAIK no actual unsigned code has been ran directly on the switch as yet plus its worth pointing out the WebKit exploit only offers userland elevation so the chances of this leading to a full blow kernel exploit is tiny, they still need to find a kernel exploit before that can happen.

 

Its an impressive achievement for sure and will allow home brewers to start making very basic homebrew but its not going to mean free games for every one.

It really does feel rushed doesn't it? Surely the Wii U could of hung in there for another 6 months, the Switch would have still been released in plenty of time before Christmas, with a stronger game line up (more than one strong game would have been good), and with some of the faults ironed out.

Well now, you need to setup your router to redirect a social network login page to your exploit page, or make it so that it goes to a web page when you connect to a wireless connection. You can't just put a URL, complicating the execution to users. This is because it is the only way to get access to the web browser.

 

Well, all I see, is that if Nintendo really wants a web browser, they'll just change the whole thing. Maybe use Chromium or something, so the vulnerabilities would be solved.

With continued research, I see that the problem with the scratch dock is a manufacture or packaging defect. Some people have the front panel of the dock bent inwards applying high pressure to the screen when you slide the unit in. That is why Nintendo didn't saw the issue. The joycons issue, seeing that only few people face it, could be that many people put their wireless router with their TV, and not their computer. So, the joycons not only battle your hand, and objects in between, but also the high inherence caused by your router. Bluetooth and your home wireless are both 2.4GHz. What needs to be tested, is if you disable 2.4GHz signal from your wireless router, does that help? How about changing the router wireless channel? How about moving away to another room the router, does the issue with the joy cons solved? The problem is that the issue has yet to hit a tech savvy person to be able to investigate properly. The game console controllers don't have the issue, as there is space for a larger antenna on the circuit board, and you don't have your hands blocking it. The antenna is usually between your 2 hands when you hold the controller. Bluetooth is a pretty weak signal. Body, and even a glass of water can interfere with the signal.

I'd love to hear what @colonel_mortis has to say about #3, is that how it works?

 

I've being looking around on a certain console hacking website and I've discovered 3 things

 

1) The exploit is real and has been executed on the switch by injecting the exploit into the Switchs browser using RPC. The instructions have been given to other hackers and have been repeated but are not likely to ever be made public.

2) Its a userland exploit and nothing more, its useless even for creating homebrew and that's ignoring...

3) WebKit is running in a virtualized sandbox on the Switch so technically your not even breaking into the Switches userland, your breaking into the lower privileged VM Userland. For this to be useful at all will require a DEP Exploit so you can break out of the DEP and into console memory.

 

Its also worth noting that a few trustworthy members also reckon the Switch is using UEFI (or some variant of it) and has something like Secure Boot which is protecting the entire boot up phase from attack. This means the most you can ever hope for is a temporary exploit ran from the console after every boot, a persistent attack might just not be possible. They also think Nintendo delayed the Switches VC due to the way Wii U hackers used a VC exploit to create a semi persistent hack, apparently Nintendo wanted to make sure the VC exploit cannot be used on the Switch. NONE OF THESE CLAIMS ARE BACKED UP WITH ANY PROOF SO TAKE WITH APPROPRIATE SALT.

Every console that had its door opens, have failed. Publishers want DRM, and they want the console manufactures to be pro-active against it.

A little more complex from Nintendo's point of view.  

  1. The March release window is important in Japan (new school year in April and money for spending on it more likely available).  
  2. There's a second buying Window going into Summer in NA & Europe.
  3. Breath of the Wild.  That's probably 100 million USD in development, already proclaimed one of the greatest games of all-time, that they've likely been sitting on since at least the middle of 2016.  
  4. They need a Console Install Base to provide more Developers reason to sell on the platform.
  5. Modern Consoles are now rather effected by issues among the SoC producers, which might have shifted their production schedule around. 

 

Definitely a soft launch, though.  Much of the really interesting stuff drops just before Christmas.

Zelda is the greatest video game I've ever played bar none, honestly Nintendo came from nowhere and dropped a masterpiece open world game, it has a few tiny flaws but its damn near perfect.

it won't happen as much because of the switches muti-country compatibilty

it happen with older systems because many games that people wanted to play, couldn't because it wasn't compatible with their console and they either had to
