Companies that create supercomputers aren't fanboys so this might be good. All they care about is, cheaper, cooler, performance gains, support, and long term support.

With the shit show that the Ryzen launch is, no one is going to touch Naples with ye-olde 10 foot pole.  These are people who stayed with Power-fucking-PC for a decade because it had .0000001% more reliability than x86.

like 16 per of them, 32 if you have two. (64 if you have a 4 CPU motherboard?)(I have seen intel mobo that has it I think)

You can never have enough RAM really. Plus one of AMD's advantages is that their base RAM speed for Naples is 2400Mhz, compared to 1866Mhz(base) - 2400Mhz on Xeon.

So if AMD is able to support faster ram, and they have more of it; it's fantastic news. Especially since getting large capacity RAM at high speeds that support ECC is very expensive and hard.

I haven't fully checked but Naples at least supports 2 CPUs per board. I hope it can go up to 4 per board.

If you cannot comprehend a task that requires TB scale RAM, then you aren't the intended customer. It is expensive as heck, but worth the money if your workload requires it.

you know that there are a lot if server cpus that are the same die as a i3-i5-i7 right? there is no such thing as a server architecture, they use the same architecture as the mainstream markets with some features turned on, and then they play around with the amount of stuff: cache, cores etc.

+ intel when x99 launched had xeons that had problems at the silicon level that could not be fixed, and recently they have atom cpus dying too soon.

Zen was made to be used in largely diferent markets, why do you think ryzen has ecc support,

If data centers are ok with having 8 cpus on a single mobo, whats the problem of having 4 on the same socket?, i would say its a great idea.

Also, launching a server part < 3 months after launching the desktop part indicates it's not really a server part with a ground-up server architecture.  4 desktop parts glued together does not a server make.

Actually Zen was always a server part from the start, the desktop chip is actually the cut down re-hash job. And no in the virtualization market people always buy the highest core count CPU with enough single core performance to suit generic workloads as that is what really counts, VM density. If Naples can deliver more cores in a 1U two socket server system than Intel can for less then it's a done deal.

 

PowerPC vs x86 wasn't even about reliability, it was about application support and legacy systems. Migrating architectures is a HUGE deal, complete application rewrites and recompile along with massive amounts of testing. Switching from Intel to AMD is very simple, when you buy an HPE/Dell/Lenovo etc server you just pick the sub-model that is AMD i.e HPE DL385 vs DL380.

Kind of the point as Intel doesn't have more cores per CPU package. :D
