Porsche Design Book One - A Better Surface Book Clone

Guest Kloaked

WTF PORSCHE MAKES COMPUTERS?

There's a subsidiary of Porsche AG called Porsche Design Group, and they make a lot of expensive shit as you may have guessed. Anything from glasses to headphones. The company brought their new Surface Book clone dubbed the Book One to MWC.

It's a really sleek, albeit "boring" design but it looks gorgeous as a 2-in-1 can get in my opinion. It has a good IO, everything from two USB-C 3.1 ports (one is Thunderbolt) to a microSD card reader. As far as hardware specs go, there is merely a Kaby Lake i7-7500U with 2.7Ghz clock (3.5Ghz boost), 16GB memory, 512GB Intel SSD, 3200x1800 IPS touch display, stereo speakers, front camera and a supposedly good battery. Porsche Design claims up to 14 hours of normal use and a charging time of under 2 hours, which is nuts if true.

Unlike the Surface Book, this 2-in-1 can rotate all the way backwards with what Porsche Design calls their "VarioHinge" which is very industrial/automotive looking.

I don't see anyone here buying one of these unless you just make bank, because these are going to set you back $2,495 USD. An equally specced Surface Book will cost a little less even with the GPU base, so what you're paying for here is Porsche's design.

Small typo, the resolution is 3200x1800

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

And I like how it docks in the logo (the top panel), not directly in the keyboard.

Is the CPU in the back?

Can I pay extra to remove features?

Is there an RS model?

These questions need answers.

I like the design... However, $2500 for no dGPU? I understand using a U series processor since it also becomes a tablet but if Microsoft can cram a 965m in there's for about the same price then Porsche (wtf?) can too. If you really want to buy a detachable 2 in 1 and willing to spend that amount of money then get a Surface Book... Not this.

I saw a review of this yesterday and this is a beautiful laptop. The price is high but your not paying for the hardware but the name.

I hope other laptops adapt this hinge design as this looks like we finally reached the perfect hinge.

Lincoln should make a laptop. It'd just be a ford focus with a shiny trackpad glued on it.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

That's actually not as overpriced as I thought it was going to be, about on par with an equivalent MacBook Pro. Judging by the fact that they charged about double for the PD version of the Huawei Mate 9, I thought this thing was going to be like 5 grand.

Not that surprised TBH.  They teamed up with Lacie before to make external hard drives.

LOOL, who needs a new car when you can smell like one.

Nonetheless, Porsche Design is pretty much the joke of all hardware companies. We put the "best" hardware possible in a clamshell with the Porsche branding, so you pay x2 or x3 the average price :3. Sounds alright....

It's not a surface book clone, microsoft helped them designed this.

In other words, this is basically a major hint at what the Surface Book 2 is going to be like. Definitely a different hinge.

It has wheels, brakes, a clutch, presumably great leather interiors (seats, seatbelts, dashboard, inner door coating, etc.), a nice engine and they have to be refueled from time to time, depending on the quality of driving :3. Wait a second... aint most cars like that :D?

People don't buy Porsche Design because it's good, they buy it as a status symbol.
