The telecommunication markets are so competitionless as nearly always one company has access to the infrastructure and sell lines it to resellers. Any small provider just is not big enough to expand on their own and have to charge large upfront fees to get anywhere with most people won't pay.

The UK... idk. Everyone in the telecommunication market and the gov say they are investing but nothing is happening, at best they are rolling out fttc in quite selected locations and so slowly.

Openreach (telecommunication infrastructure monopoly) was a few months ago split from its parent BT (telecommunication provider) as it was flowing the business interests to much of BT and was to have a new directors board with nothing to do with BT after years of been told to get its act together.

Ofcom needs to be more aggressive, and we will lose the EU with their pro-consumer side and power at some point.

In december we got fttc which is over 2.5km away.

I'm not sure if the cables between the cabinet and us is copper or aluminum as in the 70s aluminum was cheaper. It corrodes easily and you get really bad reliability and bandwidth.

Plus this makes not sense:

Before getting fttc (just adsl2) we got 6.9/0.8mbps dl/ul.

When we got fttc (vdsl2+, i think) we now get 4.2/0.2mbps and it is really unstable and will drop to half to <0.01 for hours or days at a time.

Tried talking to them but they read their script and run tests then say it is fine as it is above the minimum 4mbps dl (we pay for 38/[not said, minimum 1] mbps). They they refuse to raise it.

Might be because vdsl is not good over long distance?

TalkTalk, BT and all the other resellers can go fck themselves

As a New Zealander I agree, Australians don't need faster internet :P.

On a more ironic/sad note our national fibre roll-out was based on Australia's plan, almost copy/pasted, but we didn't give up half way through and change the design. Now most places have 1Gbps plans for no other reason than it can be offered, the price would the same regardless if the speed was lower as that is how they price internet plans.

Chorus (Telecom/Spark) sucks, they are the reason our internet was so god damn awful for so long. It got so bad we passed a law breaking the company apart along with opening the back-end infrastructure. Chorus is the new infrastructure company and Spark is the new ISP, both were part of the former Telecom.

Australia is in the same situation but in a worse way. On the face of it looks like you have competition on the infrastructure side but you don't. The major ISP's pretty much have an unwritten non-compete rule and stick to their own areas creating localized monopolies. Stop this mess like we did and your problems will go away.

Fibre to the distribution point isn't a big deal because for most people the biggest speed loss will always be the CAT cable from the intake box to the pc.

Most people won't be able to tell the speed difference between pure fiber and fiber to the distribution point and coax into the house without a speed testing software

Oh God, don't talk to Chorus. They're bloody awful. Massive wait times, hugely bodged installs (like installing the gear above a toilet, next to a shower) and inaccurate speed claims. I live in the CBD of the capital city, and we can't get fibre internet until 2019, so we're stuck on VDSL running through phone lines since our building isn't wired for ethernet.

And that's at 9:30am, with 90% of the building off at work (I work from home). In the evenings it's half that.

Personally. Because of this. LOTS Of Australian's Including myself are RAGING MAD.

Most of australia is still stuck on ADSL2+ with under 20mbps. me myself on 4mbps on ADSL2+ (At my Step-Dads house, Cable with Optus on 30down and 2 up)

People even saying "NBN Has to have a chat with ChorusNZ" (Chorus Rolling out Ultra Fast Broadband in NZ, passing australia in akamai rankings.)

I WAS going to get Hybrid Fibre-CoAxial but. The Optus HFC network was deemed "Too old" Now 700 thousand people will be on Fibre-To-The-Distribution-point instead.

(I'm not sure if I'm getting that.)

Ever since the Coalition (Liberal) Party went into action. They changed the nbn up to MTM (Multi Technology Mix) Containing:

Fixed Wireless

Satellite (which we apparently lead in now.)

FTTP

FTTN

FTTdp

HFC (Maybe)

Back in 2009 when nbn was started by the Labour party (Labor party for all you americans that don't use u in these type of words) We were originally going to get a full FTTP rollout Eventually offering 1 GBPS speeds (I Believe.) then the Coalition (Liberal) Scrapped it.

I'll stop by "half" rant here.

I don't respect Australia as a country even, you guys seem to elect utter pillocks and have some of the most hair brained shit I've ever seen, and I from Ireland, so that's saying something. mind you, I suspect the high percentage of Irish blood is probably what caused it.

Trying to sensor games, the retarded parliament, the internet shit, I can only imagine it's worse because only the big ticket stuff reaches us here.
*edit* thought of another joke. We only hear about the major BS because the rest is still uploading or not worth wasting the precious bandwidth.

and yet, we still don't have that... when will it become illegal for them to offer (or at least charge for) anything less than 50?

Well I hope it gets better for you down south, we had a similar problem only it was inside of our isp's parent isp, and after a year or so, they go some of them out, got a grant, and one morning the division that serves me showed up with a trencher on a truck with fiber and said "where shall we dig?"

Its a massive improvement going from "6x1" to 100x100 and have the option of going back or going up to 250, 500, or 1 gigabit by 1 gigabit. They just said they can't go faster due to bottlenecks surrounding us.

Not quite how it works, they're only required to have it available to all Canadians. The CRTC has no say on pricing. Also it was announced on December 21st. They've set aside 750mil so far, give them time :P I think their goal is 10 years. Only like 16% of Canadians don't have access to 50 Mbps internet.

Haha, I imagine most people will have it far before that. They have to say that so that a little logging town in the middle of no where can't be like "ermm...we don't have it..so you haven't met your claim".

And here I am, just got adsl1 four months ago and wont ever get nbn here. Never got an exchange upgrade here because 'nbn rollout was coming' then we were taken off the roll out schedule because it would of made them miss the target deadline.

Here I am just fucking glad I don't have idsn anymore.

There are benefits of living in a small country like Belgium. Doesn't cost as much to get good infrastructure going.

Mind you the official speed is like 200/20, the extra speed is the cherry on top when the node's uncongested.
