As a tier 2 at an ISP I can confirm this. Since Thursday we have been receiving 15-20 calls per day of "my internet dont work"...release/renew fixes this. I knew this wasnt just all a coincidence.

I've had issues with my clients PCs not working with release/renew. But agreed, many of our clients did first call their ISP. One client said he had to look up the ISP phone number on his tablet (wifi, not cellular). Was funny.

So that's the source of the problem.

Had a family member complaining about no internet all day on a Windows 10 laptop but an Android phone was working fine.

'ipconfig /renew' worked. Funnily enough 'ipconfig /release' was completely broken and it wouldn't run the command at all.

But it was fairly quick exercise to discover DHCP not working properly since all the addresses were bonkers.

Hell no.. I haven't had any issues with Windows 10, and in my opinion, it's much better than Windows 7

Wasn't perfect but the major bugs were worked out far sooner than this BS

Let's force updates, they said. We know what's best our users, they said. What could possibly go wrong, they said. How many times does this shit need to happen before we all realize giving a single corporation full control to forcibly perform worldwide software updates is a terrible idea?

In other news, reading this article caused forum user Me1z to laugh so hard that he proceeded hyperventilate. As paramedics carried him away he shouted something about Windows 7 reigning supreme.

But but but I was told - On this website - that with the new testing model buggy updates would never happen because there are two more layer of testing!
/s

Yeah I think (most) of us saw this coming, that one day a Microsoft update would cause issues, and so being unable to opt out of updates was a bad idea.
- Also think about this... If this Win10 device is the only way the person can access the internet. They can't exactly easily look up the cause, or a solution... That is actually really bad...

I would love to see a list of all the terrible Windows 10 updates that have been released so far. It seems like it's about one every month on average.

How anyone can defend automatic, forced updates after shit like this happening over and over again is beyond my comprehension.

My friend works at first like support and he gets at least 2 calls about this a day. Multiply that by 30 (the others working there) and you get hell of a lot of calls, and it's been this way for like 2 weeks now.

Hmm, I updated my 10 computers and they still have internet (though slow as it always has been). Ouch those who were hit with the problem and had no idea how to resolve it.

Don't you love those people. Just because it hasn't happen to you doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I keep trying to explain that to them.

These are attack vectors. Sooner or later someone will compromise the telemetry and just watch what you are doing (possibly hoping for credit card info, or maybe to find some politician looking at porn or something), or someone will get ransomware inside the update server environment, and a shitload of people will get ransomwared.

And when it happens, I will be here. Laughing. Laughing hard than I laughed when Shillary lost the election (I don't know if it's actually possible for me to laugh that hard). Because both of these things are just terrible ideas all around. All M$ has done with Windows 10 is paint the biggest bullseye in internet history on their back.

They will go after the telemetry data servers IMHO. It also stores the logs from the keylogger built into windows10...

An update has been released that should fix this issue.

KB3206632

Quote

Addressed a service crash in CDPSVC that in some situations could lead to the machine not being able to acquire an IP address.

No idea what the service does, and it doesn't seem like anyone else does either (gotta love Microsoft's documentation, right?)

The only thing i found about it after a quick google is its name( Connected Devices Platform Service ) and a very  vague description what it does in theory...

Someone here said it was "associated with Bluetooth, or Printers & Scanners as well as music players, storage devices, mobile phones, cameras, and many other types of connected devices.".

Forced automatic updates have never been a good idea from the start. I said the same thing months ago and was shot down by certain people, I hope those people had the misfortune of being this update's latest victims.

I was amazed as you are, but there was a larger proportion of pro-forced update users back then. Something about stubborn Windows users disabling updates causing themselves to be vulnerable to security exploits, can't remember specifics but that was the gist of it. I am glad that people have largely wised up since then judging by the responses in this thread so far.

It was the same group that insists win10 telemetry is not spying ad its all ok that MS collects undisclosed amount and type of information...
