[Rumour] NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1080Ti may have 10GB of VRAM

Before we get into anymore detail, it should be noted that this is a rumour (or 'rumor' for you seppos) and thus should be taken with at least a grain of salt. Cool. With that out of the way, let's dive into the topic.

 

So it's no secret that NVIDIA has something up their sleeve to tackle the inevitable release of AMD's Vega GPUs and it's safe to say that it will arrive in the form of something called the GTX 1080Ti; NVIDIA's flagship GPU that is speculated to roughly provide the performance of its Titan counterpart while being more affordable for those who aren't willing to drop $1000+ on a GPU. The Ti series were always popular and this next iteration looks to be no exception.

 

The 'source' of this rumour comes from an Indian shipping manifest that suggests the GTX 1080Ti will sport 10GB of video memory and have a 384-bit memory bus; clearly more 'powerful' than the GTX 1080 but not as 'good' as the Titan XP. Makes perfect sense. That's quintessentially business 101.

The GTX 780Ti had 3GB of VRAM compared to the 6GB on the Titan Black and the GTX 980Ti had 6GB compared to the Original GTX Titan X's 12GB.

 

Today's Titan has 12GB of GDDR5X VRAM and simply halving it would result in a GTX 1080 Ti that had 6GB of VRAM, something that Nvidia would simply not release given the fact that their GTX 1080 has 8GB of VRAM. With the GTX Titan series always having a VRAM capacity lead over their desktop counterparts we expect the GTX 1080Ti to have either 10GB of GDDR5X VRAM, using a cut-down memory bus to allow for the GPUs lower VRAM capacity.

 

In order for the GTX 1080Ti to have less VRAM than the GTX Titan X but more than the 1080 Nvidia will need to use a smaller memory bus size,  changing their 384-bit memory bus to a 320-bit memory bus, allowing Nvidia to use fewer VRAM chips and create a hypothetical 10GB GTX 1080Ti.

 

This decrease in memory bus size will also result in a decrease in overall memory bandwidth, lowering the total memory bandwidth from 480GB/s down to 400GB/s.

 

But there's one teeny tiny problem. What memory configuration is it in? AFAIK, if the card were to have 10GB of VRAM with a 384-bit memory bus, we would theoretically run into a similar situation not unlike the GTX 970's VRAM problem (aka that whole 3.5GB shenanigan). The article proposes that this problem can be solved by having a 320-bit memory bus but the Indian shipping manifest says otherwise. Geez, this is confusing.

 

So what do you think? Are you looking forward to the card? Do you think we will run into another 'ramgate' or will NVIDIA ensure that it won't happen again? It looks to be a good card but there are still many, many questions yet to be answered.

I've seen so many dang rumors about this now, first it was 8, then it was 12, then it was this, then it was that, bla bla bla.  I hate all this hype crap, I don't give a dam what it MIGHT have, I don't give a dam if it MIGHT come out.  I'll care when Nvidia releases an official statement lol.

So it's expected that the 1080 ti will fall between the 1080 and titan XP in terms of gaming performance? perhaps it'll close the gap with the titan XP rather than with the 1080.

Considering previous 980ti was very close to Titan X then can be safe to say that but who knows

Why do people think all the users that bought Titan X's would be angry if a TI variant comes out?

 

I'm sure some would be disappointed but, realistically speaking, they've had their cards for months in advance with top tier performance while others waited a very long time to get similar performance for less money.

 

It's like "early access" in a way, they pay for the "right now" performance, rather than "oh in 6 months i saved a few hundred bucks" performance.

I don't see any reason for it to have 10gb, 8gb is enough at the moment and would only add to costs. Yes it will lie between the 1080 and titan but where in that void no one knows and I don't think we should use previous cycles as a method to base assumptions. Nv defo won't want another 970 experience that's for sure.

10 * 1024MB GDDR5X 32 bit = 320 bit. It's not that hard to understand.

 

Getting 10GB with 384 bit however, would be quite impossible. You could use (8 * 1GB) + (4*512MB) = 10GB Vram. 12 chips * 32 bit = 384 bit. However, when the buffer is 50% filled, the 4 lower capacity ones won't be able to continue working with the 8 high capacity ones. So at 50%, the buss width is reduced to 256 bit. Needless to say, it would be an abomination.

 

Jokes aside, i continue to believe that GDDR5X is little more than a stopgap measure between the Dual Data 4GHZ of the GDDR5 and HBM2 memory.

They have worked around the issue with different memory densities before, it doesn't have to be a crippling problem.

 

But a clean cut to 320-bit would make the most sense.

 

GDDR5X is more like quad data rate in practice (just like GDDR5). HBM and HBM2 step back down to plain dual data rate (and lower clocks).
