Youtube adds support for HDR video

YouTube today announced that its platform now supports high dynamic range, or HDR, video.

So now YouTube is trying to urge both creators and viewers to start dabbling in HDR video in a central location, and its best way of doing that is by pushing the world’s largest video platform to adopt the format

 

And for those who don't know what HDR is

HDR essentially allows screens with the right hardware specifications to display a more accurate and realistic range of whites and blacks, as well as a wider range of colors.

wait why would i do this? youtubes compression is pretty bad anyways no? i mean i watch on a 720p screen but have youtube at 4k because the higher bitrate makes that much of a difference.

Thats some pretty dope features being included. Question is, how many users have HDR capable devices out in the wild (Note 7 is dead, so thats less 3-5 million users with that), since LG/Samsung/Sony HDR Tv's represent less than 10% of the models sold (im assuming 5000-8000$/€ Tv's dont sell very well), also because computers are more convenient to watch Youtube on, but dont have the necessary displays to drive HDR yet and the amount of video's with this feature is very scarce i suppose, if existant at all yet.

I still don't understand how the colours and contrast values of an image can be dependant on a specific "feature" of the screen. If it simply has better contrast or colour accuracy, why call it HDR? Can someone enlighten me?

To all those asking "who has HDR monitors" or "why bother if there are no HDR monitors", YouTube adding support for this helps resolve the chicken and the egg problem. Besides, I'd rather have content available that can hopefully downgrade elegantly rather than having hardware that will sit unused to its fullest potential for some unknown period of time.

It's like calling 1080p "high definition". As opposed to what?

 

But there's a standard. "SDR" is 8-bits per color channel with about 6 stops of dynamic range. "HDR" is at least 10-bits per color channel with 17.6 stops, though there's a brightness requirement that the display must be able to do at least 1000 nits (4000 if you're doing Dolby)

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

why? The bit rate is so fucking trash any fast moving video, like gameplay, with more than 3 colors turns into a mosaic.

I'd like it if they added 1440p+ resolutions to Youtube mobile...Also compression kind of sucks on Youtube, so wouldn't this be pointless?

They refuse to add HEVC (h265) support because it would compete directly with their VP9 codec, and the future AOM codec (Alliance for Open Media:  http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=172550&page=6 )

HDR isn't just 10 bits per color, it's also new color space which is already supported by HEVC but I wasn't aware they ported that to VP9..

It is i think, your phone just needs to support the resolution your watching

 

like if your phone is 720p you can watch only 720p video and lower, if your phone is 1080p than you can watch 1080p and lower

Won't happen (uploading it works, but it won't stream in that format) because Google is pushing VP9. It is very comparable to H.265, but free (as in freedom and free beer).

H.265 is surrounded by a ton of patents and licensing fees. It's a mess.

HDR video is the same thing, except for video.

 

Ultimately the point of HDR is you can have bright and dark things in the same scene without losing detail for either.

Ultimately the point of HDR is you can have bright and dark things in the same scene without losing detail for either.

In cameras HDR depends exclusively on the camera used. It takes the same picture multiple times at different contrast levels and then mashes it up in a better image. Maybe you can do it with a video camera too, but the thing is the screen used should not matter.
