TTL's R9 290X Review.

Apparently a 780 is better. That cooler is crud. I think the people looking forward for the 290x will be slightly disappointed. I hope the non reference coolers make the card better than what it is.

Old shit no one cares about but me.

You might want to fix that name.

This is TTL not LTT. That threw me off. I love Tom, but everyone else says he's wrong. Maybe he got a bad driver or something, because I've read or watch 5 other reviews so far and the card is not only handing to the 780 but is trading blows with the Titan.

I think you mean TTL's review. And no one really is going to buy the reference cooler (unless s/he really must have the card RIGHT NOWW!!). Asus, Gigabyte and MSI will have their coolers out soon.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-5820K, Corsair H115i, Asus X99-Deluxe/USB 3.1, G.Skill Ripjaws4 32GB 2800MHz CL16, Zotac RTX 3070, Samsung 950 Pro 512GB in Angelbird Wings PX1, Samsung 850 EVO 1TB, 5*Seagate 12TB, Cooler Master V1200, Phanteks Enthoo Luxe, Windows 10 Pro. Phillips 328P6VUBREB, Corsair Vengeance K95 RGB Cherry MX Brown, Logitech G502 X Plus, Sennheiser HD700.

AYANEO 2S: AMD 7800U, 32GB 7500MHz, 2TB WD SN850X. Windows 11.

Card is hot and noisy.

Then wait for 3rd party, it'll make it much cooler and quieter, then AMD is in the best position possible.

Tom's first part of his video was done a week or two ago, then he did the discussions at the end with the pricing which was a day or two ago.

I agree with him that RIGHT NOW, you should buy a 780, but in a week or two when custom coolers come out, it's best to get the 290X.

if price is not considered its on par with the 780 at 1080p, titan beating it at 1080p. But it does excel in most games at higher res

So, it costs 550$ & after I saw these benchmarks it beats both 780 & titan except 2 games (BF3 & Far cry 3). So, that price is very good for R9 290x. But the one thing that I didn't like - temperatures! In gaming mode it reaches 94 celsius, while Evga GTX 780 SC version's peak is 65. The only question I have: Will there available non-reference cards of R9 290x with better cooling system, like that EVGA version?

Eventually yes. However, if the card is designed to run at 95 degrees as he says than it runnin at 95 degrees isnt a problem. Heat is only bad if its more than the card is rated for.

He also stated it did not overclock very well and that the non reference 780's with factory overclocks were beating it. Tough choice at this point.

I don't know about any of you, but I wouldn't want any video card running at 95c lol. I wonder if he could have just set a custom fan curve on it to make it run a bit cooler, but with those stock fan settings, eh.

If Nvidia won't drop the prices I think I will go with R9 290x (will wait for non-reference models with better cooling system)

Though he is kinda right what esthetics and performance of the cooler is concerned, I think he is riding a bit to hard on that, if AMD isn't stupid they are going to allow 3rd Partys to sell nice Coolerdesigns and make the card a lot more competetive. Reference card are never going to be my go to if I'm not going to put a waterblock on them.

I think you will find that in quiet mode the difference is only a couple of frames.

Considering that the thing takes longer to cool down, the difference in preformance, and the minimal difference in loudness, why would anyone run in quiet mode?

Just saw that review, it's the worst! it's just him bitching about how it doesn't feel expensive and how hot it is, but AMD already came out and said that the temperatures are nothing to worry, also when non-reference cards come out they will be beast! Check Tom's Hardware review, the 290X beats the 780 and Titan at everything and it's at 73% usage now just imagine it with Mantle, even if it is the slightest bump in performance it will ridicule Nvidia's solutions! and it's $100 cheaper!! Unbelievable!

Just have to wait for the after-market coolers to come out since the AMD stock ones have always been terrible. Then we'll get to see some real over clocking on it but for £70 less than a 780 it's still pretty impressive.

Yeah, I'm sure that aftermarket coolers will fix all the issues I have with the card. Man, 95c. too hot for sure. I don't care what AMD says.

I want to see what kind of overclocks you would be able to get with an aftermarket cooler. Tahiti usually gets a pretty decent gain in framerate from overclocking, hopefully its the same with this.

I have watched all review but his and they all have not thing but good thing to say. It is faster than the Titan, and will be even faster with better drivers.

Oh look, one guy does a meh review of a newfangled GPU and that one guy is TTL.  Never would've guessed on that one.
