What was your first computer?

xserd

The year was 2001, and the specs were:

  • CPU: AMD Thunderbird C 1400 MHz (king of the hill back then :D )
  • M/B: Can't recall
  • Soundcard: Sound Blaster Live Platinum 5.1 with Live! Drive IR
  • SCSI Adapter (Oh yeah, baby!): Adaptec 29160N
  • SCSI HDD: Quantum 10k RPM SCSI 160 17.6 GB (man, that things was loud)
  • GPU: First an Asus V8200 Deluxe GeForce3 Ti 500, but that had some issues, so I

later changed to a Radeon 8500 IIRC.

  • Cooling: First a leaf blower of a CPU cooler, after that my first water loop:
  • CPU block: Aquacomputer Cuplex Classic
  • Pump: Eheim 1048
  • Radiator: Aquacomputer Airplex Classic
  • Chassis: I think it was a Chieftech CS901, not sure about the color

AMD Sempron 140 unlocked and overclocked by about 200-300Mhz

4GB of RAM

Nvidia Geforce 9500GT

The feeling you get when you have everything all hooked up and it powers on and POSTs successfully is the best feeling in the world.

Yes that is one hell of a feeling, I was waiting for the post beep but i didnt have the speaker in and i nearly had a heart attack.

Yeah I remember mine pretty well and only about 7 months ago was it made.  Stayed up all night putting it together to be sad that it was not working.  Figured out my PSU separated the 24 pin and it never dawned on me when plugging everything up.  Now I'm fighting myself to not upgrade it yet =(

My first build was an 80286 built from parts pulled from a trash dumpster! If I remember correctly there was a 30MB MFM  drive attached via an ST506 controller and a whopping 1 MB of memory that was soldered onto the motherboard. I learned a lot from putting those parts together!

This was back around '88 or '89 I think.

The computer isn't the "Thing".....the computer is the "Thing" that gets you to the "Thing".  - excerpt from "Halt and Catch Fire".

I ever have 386SX -> 486DX -> Pentium 133 -> Celeron 333 desktop PC which is build by other people. I think I first build my own PC with Celeron 633 o.c to 950, 32MB RAM, GF2MX, and 20GB HDD, that was awesome spec at my high school time

I remember dressing in a tiny lab coat, dancing around yelling IT'S ALIVE after I was done. By tiny lab coat I mean you could see my genitals.

And that, kids, is how uncle Tuckfam got kicked out of his mother's house.

  • 2 weeks later...

we had an acorn computer which just had a black screena nd green text and i printed english homework on it (dot matrix printer)
then we had a family computer which im guessing was an athlon xp 1700+ running xp, i then got my own computer given to me....

(this was in 2004 so 9 years ago... i was 15)
amd athlon k7 650mhz slot A

QDI kinetiz A motherboard (usb1.1 and agp for the win)

128 (possibly 256) mb of sdram (100mhz)
nvidia geforce4 mx440 (sounds impressive i know) 64mb...

40gb western digital hard drive (black in color)
EZ-cool 450w power supply (no its an old one before sata existed)
modified version of xp sp2 with a black theme and a round "start" orb which i love!
it still works now (lost the heatsink for the mx440 and now use a p162 which is essentially the same)
I have put 512mb of ram in it (for context the maximum the board allows is 768mb and idle in xp it only uses 100mb and never touches 200), I have installed chrome on it and VLC and it has a pluscom wireless G card so its perfectly usable.....slow but usable...
will upload a pic of me on this page on it in next few days if anyone wants to see  :D

I have no idea about the specifications, but I remeber it was a Leading Edge, it took FOREVER to start up, and the printer was really loud.  Of course, this was back in the early-mid 90s, so there was no basis for comparison back then.
