My first was for my brother-in-law. I can't remember the detailed specs, but it was along the lines of:

i7 2600K

4GB of Gskill Ripjaws DDR3 1333

ASUS P8P67-V (I can't remember which one exactly)

WD Caviar Black 1TB

ATI Radeon HD5850 (just before it was discontinued and 6000 series came out)

Antec 900-2

600/650W PSU from Corsair; think it was the TX series.

SSDs were too pricey back then.

My own, about a year later:

i5 3570K

MSI Z77A-G45

Crucial M4 128GB

WD Caviar Black 1TB

Coolermaster HAF 932

Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB DDR3 1600

Seasonic X560-FL 80+ Gold

ASUS Bluray drive (because it was cheap)

Samsung S23A300B 23" monitor

Already had peripherals (mouse, keyboard, headset).

I noticed this as i was looking through but, i think that your CPU is bottle necking the 7870 by a noticable bit, any reason you chose a i3 and a 7870?

At the time just money!

I didn't notice any bottleneck, I am not a pro... i just play and mine crytocurrrency with it.

SSD + i5 ivy upgrade planned, hope a pricecut with haswell arrive.

Looking around,

bla bla bla this, meh that!

Core i5-2400 (regret not buying the 2500k)

Intel DH67BL motherboard (it was cheap, no regrets)

GTX 550 ti (so many regrets)

Corsair TX650 (developed a weird buzzing noise, and shipping it to the RMA centre costs too much)

Some horrible $20 case (3 motherboard standoffs were stripped; it was just an awful case)

old WD blue hard drive I had lying around (I can't complain, it was free)

Patriot G2 1600MHz RAM (cheap and decent)

I already have an LG 21" Flatron W2246 at the moment, so I'll use that and a monitor will be the last thing I think about. When the time comes I will stretch to 2 x 24" Asus monitors.
