J.J. Abrams to announce Portal movie "soon"

Notional

According to PC Gamer, Star Trek/Wars director J.J. Abrams, is going to announce a movie adaptation of the popular minigame Portal.

header.jpg?t=1452903431

Portal was first released as a small game bundles with Half-Life 2: Episode 2 along with another small online only game, called Team Fortress 2. Since then, Portal got a full size sequel (And TF2 grew to be a huge online game).

Quote

Abrams continued: "As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.

"I look forward to being able to talk about it and announce who's working on it."

There has been talks of a Valve movie adaptation before in Half-Life, but Valve has refused, as a love story always seems to be presented.

No mention of any date for the movie, or in fact even the announcement.

Personally I think they could make an epic movie based on the Portal franchise. I do wonder if they are going serious/spooky or more child focused. I hope for the former.

I love portal. Portal is probably my favorite game/story/fantasy environment there is. I love the lore and everything about it. Although I'm excited for a move adaptation, I'm very worried they'll fuck it up. Just like every other video game movie.

Wishing leads to ambition and ambition leads to motivation and motivation leads to me building an illegal rocket ship in my backyard.

Don't worry. Hollywood is just gonna say the pie is a lie, because it rhymes. So it's better, don't worry.

I don't really see how this would work. In Portal you silently solve puzzles while listening to a robot talk. How would that translate to a movie?

I'm looking forward to the LENSE FLARES, and the heated sex scene with the companion cube.

That'll only happen if the cube is a minor, and then we'll have to awkwardly watch Chell cook up some Shakespearean B.S. for 10mins as to why statutory rape is okay.

Ok, I'm calling it.

Abrams will put a HL3 logo somewhere in the background of that movie.

I have a bad feeling about this. History has shown us that a video game movie adaptation most often suck. In fact, I think video games aren't made for that in the first place.

Yeah that's a bit odd, especially since HL2, HL2:EP1, and HL2:EP2 all spent a lot of time building up a love story between Alex and Gordon. It's plain as day, especially nearing the end of EP2, that they are going for a romance of sorts between the 2 characters.

I'd personally MUCH rather have a HL movie over a Portal movie. The story itself suits a movie format more, with bigger action set pieces, excellent dialog, a great story, etc.

But you know, Portal and HL are in the same in-game universe, so there could be some crossover, or they could do both and tie them together.

The problem with Warcraft is that if you're not a fan, you're not gonna have any idea who the fuck most of the cast is. The movie is for fans first and foremost, and while it's decent (haven't seen it, based on spoiler reviews), it's certainly not the most amazing thing ever.

Assassin's Creed does look good though, and it looks like they're doing a good job between balancing it for new viewers to the franchise vs hardcore fans of the game.
