Hmmm Portal and Portal 2 are not really mini games. They are proper computer games.

That's not how movies work dude.

They will set it in the Portal universe. Valve will feed them a lot of backstory and lore, they will use that to come up with a narrative which translates into movie format. They will have a protagonist (may or may not be Chell). They will have some recurring characters (Glados, Wheatley etc). But it will not be like watching a 'let's play'.

 

I know that Valve has been rejecting Half Life movies for years because of bad scripts from hollywood. That combined with the fact that JJ Abrams is in the picture makes me cautiously optimistic about this. Not saying it will be an oscar contender but I think if they do it, it has a chance to be good.

 

For what it's worth I did like the Warcraft movie!

I haven't seen the warcraft movie but in general the vast majority of videogame movies haven't turned out well. This is because what is good in a game (which has gameplay in it and is usually much longer than a movie) doesn't translate well to the big screen with no player interaction.

Not really. A movie usually has a much stronger story line that can be told in a short two-hour period, whereas games often have (comparatively) very weak story lines that are only made enjoyable/entertaining by the fact that you're actively immersed in them. 

 

So it makes perfect sense that a good movie implies (the potential for) a good game while the reverse doesn't always hold true.

Yeah I find the opposite to be even worse for the most part. Games that are based on movies tend to usually be huge piece of shits made by some shitty no-name dev that normally makes mobile games.

 

There have been a few exceptions - Star Wars and Star Trek have the occasional good game (but also lots of shit) - AvP made some kickass games, but also a few bad ones (Aliens: Colonial Marines, anyone?). Transformers Cybertron series was supposedly awesome - TotalBiscuit really liked them.

 

But for the vast majority of Movie licensed video games, they turn out to be terribad.

I am just intrigued as to how they would pull it off... however revered Portal is, how is the 'mainstream' audience going to cope with the fact that the protagonist is invariably silent?

It's based on a statement made in 2013 at the DICE conference, that he and Gabe said there was a possibility that a HL movie could be made. It's relatively old news, and he's listed as a Producer, so likely if he went ahead with a Portal movie, he would help create a HL movie too.

 

But nothing has been confirmed about a HL movie, as far as I'm aware.

A YT video would be best, since those are most easily digestible. I plan on watching Warcraft tonight or in the upcoming days.

I think the problem lies with Video Game movies, is that they're trying to pander to THE FANS! of the video game. Which works literally, none of the time, due to zero advertisements for the movie ( Prime Example Rachet and Clank) then expect the NEW audience which are going to come anyway and it's going to confuse newcomers.

 

In order to solve this situation the video game movie has to be in it's universe within a universe basically meaning it has to be it's own thing with little shout outs here and there for both players and newcomers. And provide enough characterization and plot to benefit both fans and newcomers alike.

 

In Rachet and Clank movie, the thing is while I know that Rachet and Clank are great buddies, we never see that in the movie. We only see them together like 5 times throughout the movie, when trying to bring a video game to the big film you have to provide something else, cause the video game action is gone like in a movie, either you have to simulate that video game action in the movie along with the various adventures of the characters.

 

Or you do a completely separate little thing that builds up everything from the ground up, and shows both characters being friends and the evil villian just being a pawn of someone greater.

 

So in Portal they gotta bring the action to the audience, and add something else on it. For example they could make Chell, make her talk about where the hell she is, how is she going to solve puzzles, have her make mistakes and take mention. It's stuff like that, is going to help bring life to the silent character.

I honestly don't know and/or can't remember of any. It wouldn't hurt if you knew general story before the Orc invasion of Azeroth, or even the First War for that matter. Nothing too specific, but in general, about Draenor, about Azeroth and even about Fel magic if you want.
