Could Linus cover a D-Wave "quantum" computer on "HOLY $H!T" ?

D Wave is a company from near where LMG operates, and I think it would be really cool if he covered it on the HOLY $H!T  segment!  

 

They operate at 25kW and cost several million apiece. There's also a bit of a debate among physicists as to whether they're "real" quantum computers.

Except it wouldn't really be fun because quantum computers don't run software people normally would run. It's a very specific application processor that's meant to tackle a class of problems, not be a general use computer.

 

So despite all the wazoo that quantum computers could smoke traditional binary computers in those classes of problems, it can't run Crysis.

Don't see much point as Holy Sheit episodes are for stuff that normal people could buy, but are not really worth it at the end. Supercomputer would be something none single person needs.

I find them really cool. It is like watching Top Gear. It is the same, well used to be, hosts you love driving and thrashing cars you can never afford. This is just with PCs and LInus

But a quantum computer so far has no consumer practical applications. It won't poop out a 4K video job in a second. It won't run Crysis 3 at a billion frames per second. It won't make the you lunch and find you the perfect significant other. The most practicality we have out of quantum computers is breaking crypto (which I guess is interesting if you're a crypto miner who wants to spend more money on the miner than the market cap of Bitcoin) and the only other practical application scientists are looking at is simulating quantum mechanics.

 

And to a degree, even some of the super cars that could appear on the show aren't really all that interesting. I don't find the Bugatti Veryon all that interesting aside from the fact yearly maintenance alone could buy a house in San Diego county and it's the fastest production car (well, until the Chiron took its place)

Not exactly. When doing the calculations, the bits can be 0, or 1, or both, but when you go to resolve your calculations, any data that is both 0 and 1 is lost, as when you "measure" the state of a particle, the super-positional effect disappears.

 

The guy in the video you linked explained it very well. You need to tailor your equations and algorithms so that the final results don't rely on those extra bits of super-positional data.

 

Obviously there's more to it then that, but for a 6 minute explanation, it's pretty damn good.

That's how I understood it, as they explained it.

 

It seems, if I understand correctly, that you can use the full q-bit in all steps in the calculation until you get to the end and you're resolving the results. This allows you to have very complex calculations in each step, allowing you to have a lot fewer steps to get to the results. The results themselves still need to adhere to binary, or non-super-positional mathematics though.

 

Of course, I'm an IT Tech, not a Quantum Physicist, so my understanding is limited compared to the experts.

Thats whole different price scale. Spending 10k for business pays its value back. But no body will spend 1M and about same for running it unless they get real value back. And only largest research groups would have something to gain.

 

Sure some of stuff covered are bit more over the point of reason than others. But to keep in mind that Puget does custom build for hire, they do get much of advertising this way.

The justification of "it's not a practical thing for people to buy" is hardly justification to not cover it...  Other than the fact that yes, the company is unlikely to make even 1 sale from the "advertisement" of the product whereas the other products covered might sell a couple (and probably have enough markup that just one sale is worth the cost of the time for a LTT tour.)   

 

 

But it would still be extremely interesting, and he'd still get a lot of views.
