Is it just me or do you take more stock in an answer from a person with a ton of posts, like 10k or more?

Like if there is a bunch of 100'er posters and then bam you get a moderator to chime in.

Thats what I dont like about Tomshardware forums - They dont got no post count next to the user.

 

I think thats why I watch Linus' vids, you know he is gunna ALWAYS be right!!!!!!    ;)

I personally do not. If the person has sound advice, and is thinking logically, or is posting factually correct information, I will listen to them whether they have 1 or 10,000 posts.

 

Honestly, some of the users who have a high post count don't seem, er, very logical.

 

But I have no doubt that many users do in fact trust someone with a higher post count more. Even subconsciously, I wouldn't be surprised if we all do it.

I just see them as people who are more dedicated not always right but they tend to know what they are talking about.

Post count should not correlate to the person's knowledge. I know it can be our natural, human inclination to respond to someone with more experience, or in this case, posts, but someone with 50 posts can be an amazing electrical engineer that's totally right, but they're getting blown off because a user(who is completely wrong) has 1000x more posts than him posted something different.

 

But we should be analyzing each and every post with a critical mind, not dismissing the user because of a low post count.

I think having a reasonable amount of posts adds some trustworthiness to your posts (someone with 1 post VS 200), but then there are people with 1K posts in their first month on the site, and when you look at their posts its in completely unrelated threads with useless posts. I also then see people ask a question in networking for example, like TCP vs UDP, and people are so quick to type a 1 sentence response to be the first replying, I actually like to type out a multi-paragraph in-depth explanation, almost like a teacher giving a lecture; I think thats far more valuable. Post count doesn't show the difference between the person who wants to be first reply and the person who carefully thought out his reply.

 

I also think that the majority of people do blindy trust people with high post counts, and that can be bad. I might have 1700 posts, but I sure as hell don't know everything, people have corrected me on things, and I've corrected people with thousands of posts too.

What I find most helpful is mods replying or mods asking questions. When Ryan Vickers asked about chaining UPSs I learned a lot from all the other mods replying. I think the best is GlenWig in displays for helping me and others. He always has the exact measurements and data rates for connector types.

I would 100% +1 this. Glenwing is extremely helpful.

Displays has always been a section FULL of misinformation and myths, and full of people spreading misinformation thinking they're correct. Glenwing's sticky faq threads alone are super helpful for people who fall for the misinformation, but on top of that his replies are always super helpful and detailed. I was a 'Trusted Adviser' in displays way back when that used to be a thing, but still my replies were never as well written as his were (even though it was the same information).

Personally i value quality over quantity, 

post count is just that, quantity. People

can give horrible advice with high post 

count and vice versa. I am almost inclined

to say that a very high post count aligns 

more with quantity over quality. 

 

But this by no means applies to everyone,

and comes from a low post count scrub,

so i am obviously bias :P

Okay, perhaps not to that degree, but the theme is there.

 

As for the topic at hand, I'd struggle to actually say that more often than not, people with a 'higher' post count, around 2k+ generally do have some better degree of knowledge at their disposal. They've been around long enough, and interacted enough, that most of them often soak in some information from the guys who know what's going down.

Its kind of like associating yourself with smart people in turn makes you a bit smarter. 

 

Now, on the flip side, that's not always true #NotAllChristians. Just because someone is around and posting, doesn't necessarily mean they've taken anything from it. 

 

However, once again... I can pretty easily say that I more often than not see people with higher post counts posting consistently more informed than people with lower post counts. Whether that's to do with them just posting more often, or me just generally avoiding the threads new members flock to.
