1080p Is 1070 overkill for 1080p ?

I have a question:

I want to buy a new graphics card and but i dont know if i should buy a gtx 1070 or a 1060 and i have a monitor which only can play in 1080p. Is a 1070 overkill or is it a great card for me?

1060 should be enough. Though a 1070 will last longer because game system requirements go up every year

agree with above 1070, I have one and can max games and get at/near 144 at all times with it. Great 1080p/144Hz card

Why?, he listed one FPS that runs well on most systems. Mirrors Edge is single player and really doesn't need the competitive edge.

Hitting 144hz with a 1060 isn't easy without turning details down. With the 1070 he'll have plenty of room.

Yeah, to make use of that 144Hz, I would get a 1070. My brother gets around 90-120 on overwatch (it fluctuates like crazy) on his 1060. A 1070 would be able to handle it just fine.

 

Though keep a eye on 1070 pricing, as both the AMD and Nvidia cards are kind of overpriced (Well, the 1060 sure is) because they're out of stock...

 

I ended up getting a used 980 Ti myself (Though I don't game...I'm using it for content creation) because it was $100 less than a current priced 1070...but yeah, 1070 for sure.

144 FPS is only needed in a competitive situation, there is no point in single player games unless its REALLY fast motioned. Overwatch is a game that's easy to hit 100+ FPS on.

As others have said, the 1070 is a great card for 1080p at 144hz and if you plan to buy a virtual reality headset in the future, you will enjoy a smoother experience.

I'd agree with you but in this case OP has a 144hz monitor and would probably like to get the most out of it. The 1060 at 1080@60 would be perfect but it doesn't follow through for 1080@144. But the 1070 does (usually) hit 144hz on most games. The 1060 in most current titles is getting about 80-100.

 

There are a lot of single-player games like Witcher 3 that will tank a lot of GPU's. Most current that I can think of is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. OP will also be able to take advantage of DSR for when he has more than enough headroom to do so.

1070 hands down.

1060 is fine for 60 Hz, even tho there are some games, that can push a GTX 1060 below 60 fps in 1080p.

 

But 144 Hz?

Get the GTX 1070, and use high settings, instead of Ultra. Lose 1% picture quality, and get a smooth perfect 144 fps~

No, I used a 980ti for 1080p for over a year and was very happy that I could play everything at 60FPS or more.

A GTX 1070 still goes down to low-mid 60s FPS in some places, in this video.

 

I would get a 1070 for 1080p gaming, because there are many graphically-intensive games that a 1060 doesn't get 60 FPS in, with settings maxed.

I'd say the GTX 1070 is right for 1080p with everything cranked up. Deux Ex Mankind Divided is already pushing my GTX 1080 around the 60s mark with everything maxed out. Though I play it on high because I can't really see a significant difference in quality between the two settings.

Seems like you already got your answer but I just want to cast another vote for 1070. As they said it will give you a lot of headroom for perfectly smooth gameplay. But there's also upgrade option in the future to consider. If you ever change your mind and want to upgrade or add screens, the 1070 is already there to handle it. Even further, you can go SLI, an option which is just not possible on 1060, if you want to and feel the need to. So yeah you should only stay under if your budget is really really tight, otherwise there are many known and unknown benefits that come with the 1070.

it's overkill for 1080p in the games that are out NOW...but if you plan on keeping the card for 2 years or more...it will quickly become handy...so in a sense NO it's not overkill...it's just ''futureproof'' to some extent...i would get one for 1080p...a friend of mine got one on my recommendation knowing he doesnt upgrade much often and it was within his price range i explained to him and figured it IS the right card for him.
