I hope that's true. AMD and RTG has done really well with some key products in my opinion. Back on track!

Pricing will be key.

It needs to be in between the GTX 1070 and 1080 pricewise for top end Vega. Otherwise everyone is getting screwed.

I still can't believe I paid less last year on launch day for my 980Ti Superclocked cards than it was for a GTX 1080 even now. Prices are bad. :(

Yeah they have him credit but how lazy do you have to be? A company that large could hire amazing people. They also really pushed it out on the Pascal launch

I hope that's true. AMD and RTG has done really well with some key products in my opinion. Back on track!

It will be that much on Ashes and Doom and the rest of the DX12 will be marginally worst while most DX11 will be 10% or so lower.

 

AMD enthusiasts will of course say "wait for drivers" even though by the time significant improvements are made Nvidia will have newer cards out. They will also be saying that "If you want to future proof for DX12 games go AMD!" even though there's no indication that asnyc compute heavy games will become more common even if DX12 games do become more common which won't happen quickly enough to justify it.

 

In other words: a repeat of Fiji, Hawaii, etc.

I told my Dad to buy stocks when they were around that price. He did and he sold a month or two later when it got up to $3.00. He said someone he knew said it was a good time to sell. He gave me a split of the profits but I really wished he would of just held out. Even then I thought it was too soon and seen/predicted  amd had some good things coming. Wished he would of talked to me first. BTW I was broke and in collage so I couldn't afford to buy any myself.

Same. In college and just gained control of my stock account, my tears are flowing from missing out on this because I knew it was coming since their roadmap was released

This image is official, from AMD. Take note of the specific type of games which qualify each tier of card as being fit for its respective marketed resolution: DOTA 2, LoL, etc.

 

AMD lists the RX 470 and RX 480 as being 1440p cards, in games such as DOTA 2 and LoL. AMD uses the same standard of DOTA 2 and LoL to call the RX 490 (which is the upcoming Vega card) as a 4K card.

Well, Vega was designed with the same mindset, and Vega's design was finalized around the time that the GTX 1070 and 1080 released, and so there wasn't time for AMD to revise Vega to suit the reality of the GPU market that Nvidia has made fully clear.

 

Taking all these things into account, I expect that the Vega-based RX 490, the so-called 4K GPU, will be a bit less powerful than a GTX 1070 in DX11 applications, and perhaps a bit more powerful than a GTX 1070 in async-compute applications... but that it will still be less powerful than a GTX 1080. I think the RX 490 will deliver about the same gaming performance at 1440p as the RX 480 does at 1080p.

No they wouldn't have, Polaris is a basically a low power laptop GPU, at low voltages it's very efficient. They would have been making a mistake to make a bigger Polaris GPU that no one would probably buy.

I agree Polaris smells of a overclocked laptop part, it was a strange release really considering it didn't really improve much on the 390, other than power efficiency.

 

Vega will be different, i suspect they will be the full desktop part...maybe 3 or 4 sku's, ranging from fury X performance up-to maybe Titan XP performance.

 

Time will tell, but i expect them to be significantly cheaper than Nvidia's offerings, There is a massive void (£300-350 where 2nd tier cards should be) in the market right now and a huge opportunity for Nvidia to gain market share and more importantly win the minds of gamers who have been effectively raped by Nvidia the last few years.

AMD's largest GPU so far this generation is 230 mm2. You're comparing it to much bigger chips and assuming AMD cannot compete because their small chip is far behind Nvidia's big chips. That's pretty daft.

 

When AMD and Nvidia use similar die sizes, they get similar performance. We see that with the GTX 1060. Maybe Nvidia has a small advantage, but it's far from generational.

What's so strange about that? It's what always happens. Look at when 28nm hardware launched. Sure, cards were introduced at the high end delivering more performance than previous flagship cards, but there were also midrange and budget options. The Radeon HD 7870 and GTX 660 weren't weird just because they didn't beat a GTX 580.

 

The only weird thing right now is that AMD has only launched its midrange and budget cards of this generation.

Well, two things - firstly, they're already struggling to supply enough RX 480s, so it's not like they have a ton of extra chips available. And secondly, it does also depend on laptop makers actually picking an AMD GPU. Given how badly AMD has lost the dedicated laptop GPU fight in recent years, it may take a while to get back into that market.

I personaly very currious to see what the new Vega cards are going to be upto.

I cannot realy believe that AMD would abbandon their Fiji concept allready after just one release.

So i wouldnt be suprised if its going to be something like a Fiji ish concept on 14nm finfet.

That's what i mean by strange and it just wasn't an improvement over what they had....the could have just reduced the 390 to £220....It felt like they where testing the waters or releasing something just to get something out...

 

Sure is a nice card and it's the card i recommend alongside a freesync panel for people who have £400 to spend...but performance wise i fell around 15-20% short of what i think a lot of us hoped for...

If you hoped for 980+ performance you were overhyped to begin with by reading bogus articles. It was stated to be at a GT970 level in today's APIs and between a 970 and 980 with things like Vulkan, and always has been.

 I wouldn't use a 390/480/970 or even a 980/1060 for 1440p it's rather pointless to play at the higher resolution if the settings can't be close to maxed out at 60 fps, but it is often as good as the 390, sometimes losing due to the 390's memory bandwidth being utilized well.

As for the rest, well, the graph itself shows that the RX 490 is a 4K card, where 4K is specifically defined as lightweight games such as DOTA 2 and LoL. And we can see for ourselves what that means, since the RX 470 and 480 are classified by AMD as 1440p cards, specifically in lightweight games such as DOTA2 and LoL, while their performances in more typical AAA 1440p gaming is very different.

In non DX12 games, the best AMD card of their newest generation is about as powerful as a GTX 970, the mid-tier card from Nvidia's previous generation. Nvidia is on the GTX 10XX series right now. AMD is competing against Nvidia's performance from last generation, which makes it literally generational.

Only if your definition of "more than enough for every 1080p game" includes lowering graphical settings to get 60 FPS in non DX12, graphically-intensive games.

 

And an RX 480 can't hit 60 FPS at 1440p even in DX-12 heavy games.
