@LinusTech You should do a review of THIS monster. Apparently it burns wood and converts the thermal energy into power you can use to charge USB devices. I don't know if its a gimmicky product that puts out like .5 amps or what but it SEEMS like a cool idea! It also seems like the kinda thing you would have fun reviewing.

Here's a little TL;DR of what you need to know about the GTX 970 and R9 390

R9 390 works better in VRAM-bound scenarios and compute bound scenarios and is best paired with higher end processors

GTX 970 works better in CPU-bound scenarios and tessellation bound scenarios and is best paired with lower end processors

You can do the same with a can,  a TEC peltier generator,  and a other few cheap component

Seems like you would have to keep putting twigs in. Doesn't seem big enough to burn for more then a couple minutes

Open Flame + Sensitive Electronics = Ruined Electronics. 

 

Plus little survival stoves are very cheap, and all this is really a can with a thermoelectric generator on it. Not worth the over $100 they want for it and over $200 with the rest of the accessories.

Here's a little TL;DR of what you need to know about the GTX 970 and R9 390

R9 390 works better in VRAM-bound scenarios and compute bound scenarios and is best paired with higher end processors

GTX 970 works better in CPU-bound scenarios and tessellation bound scenarios and is best paired with lower end processors

Unfortunalely, I have met some people that couldn't start a fire even with a lighter.

These things along with those portable chargers (overpriced solar cells that only marginally work) that Luke reviewed a few weeks back are both pretty much gimmicks. Im sure they work on some level but not good enough to justify the weight you will use to carry them. No backpacker that is going to be traveling long enough to need one of these compared to a 20Ah battery pack is going to spend their weight on this. Most big trails that people walk down have waystations they can charge up at. Not that they will be using phones really, and GPS devices use a lot less battery.

 

And if youre spending the weekend in the woods where you still get cell signals, just bring a battery pack.

 

Or... just turn your phone off and enjoy the outdoors.

I have one.

 

It's a wood gasification burner, it will charge my iPhone but not my samsung tablet.

 

I bought it when we were without power for a couple days.  Has fairly consistent heat output, depending on fuel.  Nice to cook over.

 

So it has a thermal couple, a battery a blower and stainless steel construction.  Even with stainless, the heat output is enough to promote slow corrosion in the combustion chamber.

 

I run mine mostly on wood pellets.

Coal fires can be a bit tricky to start actually. Especially for city folk who have cultural indifference to 'roughing it'.
