I don't use an adblocker but I do use a popup and auto play javascript blocker. Not because I hate ads but those ads can be viruses and also javascript can contain R32 which is a ransomware in a simple popup or auto download from a site.

I started using adblock when I still had the Pentium 4 system 3 years ago. Ads were slowing down the system so much that it was actually crashing the browser on some sites. It was making a painfully slow system even slower.

 

After installing it I noticed how much nicer it was not hearing the same 2 ads over and over on youtube.

 

I do white-list sites if they have very tame, intrusive ads.

 

Whitelisted sites are:

Crunchyroll

as well as a small collection of other sites with little to no ads (specifically ones that quietly sit out of the way).

There are exceptions, at least at home. If the ads on your site are intrusive AF or you have a billion ads on a 10-line article, I'm blockin' yo ass.

At work, however, it's pretty much turned on for everything since some of the sites I end up are highly shady (we've ended up looking up products by OEM or EAN codes and getting on some weird-ass pr0n sites unwillingly)

Yes I do.

For starters, ads are riddled with viruses, site i've never been on, or don't support I run adblock on.

Sites however like forums I frequent, and youtube channels I like, I whitelist past my ad blocking software. Its kind of like not only protecting myself, but giving me some form of power over who and what I do and do not support.

I have a giant hosts file installed on a DNS server that's in my firewall/gateway.  That re-writes DNS lookups as needed.  It provides systemic protection against ads for the entire network and anyone who might end up using it.  Saves the hassle of installing "adblock" or similar on my individual devices, etc.  And provides a level of security so I don't accidentally load "tubgirl" or similar garbage.   If any of my houseguests want to bypass it, they can use the Google DNS servers, or they can use a VPN -- I don't do anything fancy to try and deny the use of outside DNS resolvers.   And if they don't want to do that, I actually have a virtual wireless network that provides "naked' access to the Internet.

 

To me, its a matter of making my computer equipment actually last and not wasting bandwidth.  Maybe I'd be more receptive of the ad companies if they'd pay for my computer upgrades, or pay for my bandwidth.  But they don't, so I'm not obliged, morally, to actually load their websites.  I don't buy anything from the advertisers, so why would I waste *their* bandwidth?

I don't use AdBlock. I do use other browser extensions that, while not primarily targeted to advertisement, end up blocking some ads in some websites. Assuming you are interested in some form of advertisement blocking, rather than AdBlock specifically, I'd have to say yes.

I've recently started using adblock, to help alleviate some of the load on my system (4790K, 32GB DDR3-1600, etc).  I'm also trying some script blockers, like ghostery, as well.  (My current adblock is ublock origin.)

 

I don't have any whitelists set up yet, although when necessary (like when I want to buy something, or donate, etc), I'll temporarily turn off blocking as needed.

 

I'd like to whitelist a few sites, like LTT forums for example, but I want to make sure that the ads' resource usage will be kept down to my personal standards.  For example, no ad should play audio or video (unless I go out of my way to force it to do so, like the equivalent of rewriting Windows 10 in assembly code and compiling it by hand).  Text should be kept to about 128 bytes, and images to about 128x128 pixels, static jpg or short animated gif.  Links can't have several hundred characters of gibberish in them - for example, a link to the evga ftw gtx 1070 on newegg should be http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487259 not some long cryptic link.

 

Another way to put how lean I'd like ads to be when displayed on my system - an ultra-low-budget computer from the 1970s (like $500 including peripherals, or what would be the equivalent then to a low-end chromebook/tablet today - maybe with a <100 kHz CPU, 32 kb RAM, etc) would have as much difficulty running an ad, as a system with 8 Xeon E7-8890 v4's, 24 TB of RAM, 2 Nvidia Tesla GP100s in SLI, and 5 Intel DC P3608 SSDs in Raid 0 would have with booting the initial release of CP/M. :)

I use Ghostery for ad-blocking and I whitelist my favourite sites (and the ones that aren't obnoxious with their ads).

I can't stand the Internet without it. I auto white-list "acceptable ads" (as defined by AdBlock+), as well as sites I check on an individual basis. For example I used to have Anandtech white-listed, but then they changed over to having a huge top banner ad which loaded slowly (so elements on the page were jumping around while it loaded, causing misclicks). Turned on Adblock on Anandtech as soon as that happened.

Yeah, but not for all sites. Generally sites I visit a lot, I have it turned off (eg. this forum and YouTube) to support the websites (and content creators in the YouTube instance). It just feels a lot safer when some sites have malicious ads (or can get them).
