Pascal consumer = Maxwell on speed confirmed

Agosto

YouTube channel AdoredTV has conducted some tests about Pascal per-core performance, proving his former statement that consumer Pascal is basically Maxwell on steroids.

From this video we can see that the 980Ti has a slight advantage over the 1080 when running at the same clockspeed (due to the higher core count), while the two cards perform equally if their TFLOPS values are adjusted to the same level (achieved by severel downclocking the 1080 and slightly underclocking the 980Ti)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDaekpMBYUA

Quote

[...] this was a sample choiche for NVIDIA; they already had the architecture with Maxwell. It was on 28nm and they had a massive efficiency leap. A simple thing to do was just shrink Maxwell and get the benefit from moving to 16nm FinFET; and that's pretty much what they have done, at least for their consumer GeForce cards.

There are obviously some advantages on the software side for Pascal, but this tests were all about performance per core, which is practically the same across the two architectures. That's also why AMD could have easily reached NVIDIA performance and efficiency wise this time (but it sadly failed).

We need to wait for Vega to say whether AMD failed or not - 480 was never meant to compete against the 1070/1080/980 Ti

Well, yes, Pascal was mainly die shrink process after all, kinda like Intel's Tick.

There's the 1060 too

And the 480 is on the same level of the 970, but uses more power while being on a smaller node... so it's pretty much a fail.

Check the Sapphire Nitro under DX12/Vulkan compared to the 1060. It's 10-25% faster

In a couple years when games adopt more VRAM and Vulkan, the RX 480 will crush the 970 to bits, but that does not matter since Nvidia will drop Maxwell just like they did Kepler since

What? I didn't mean failed on the economic side... it failed to deliver what I (and many others) expected from Polaris. I don't want AMD to fail, I really hoped for a good 480 in order to switch to AMD.

DX12 and Vulkan are still in their early stages, and the gains on these APIs on AMD cards are large because of DX11/OpenGL driver overhead/issues on the red side; Async is playing a very small role there. Pascal is still much more efficient

If you check DF (they used a newer driver in the benches) - the 480 is closer to the 980 than the 970. (there is a comparison) and under DX12 the 480 gets a 20% boost whereas the 980/970 don't get shit. Vulkan - well - there's not even a fair comparison as the 480 just wrecks them

if I had to guess, I think it will win (since its a big 14nm die) but not on power efficiency which isn't a major issue given the target market for vega.

There are more than a dozen games out and dozens more on the way using DX12. Vulkan is yet to arrive in full force but DX12 is here. Sorry but Nvidia's Pascal is not ready for it. Volta likely will be.

Agreed - I doubt AMD will take back the efficiency crown (which they lost in 2010).

Not to mention the RX 480 is STILL in its early stages,so maybe after it gets some big drivers it can get close to the 980 Ti,in DX12/Vulkan well,it becomes a complete other tier of GPU's

That's also why I was hoping for a beastly RX 480. NVIDIA can increase prices and people would still buy everything...

The Pascal-based Titan X will only be available on nvidia site, AFAIK. The 200$ price premium is both because of their advantage, both because... *speculation* confuse less informed consumers.

I'm pretty sure that there are lots of unsold Maxwell Titan Xs; some people will see them for 200$ less and buy them, and both nvidia and the retailers could empty their stocks.
