And why aren't there many +12V Only Supervisior Chips available?? (well, they exist - but only in the larger 14pin packages...)

 


Most 3rd party types don't seem great and have bad UVP or OVP trip points...

wasn't it the PS223 that has +12V UVP at around 8,5V??

Most 8pin are garbage and don't even have UVP on +12V, really low UVP on other rails...

So, in talking to Weltrend about their newest HKIC to support Alternative Sleep Mode.  It's truly nothing special outside of the new T1 and T3 timings.  Essentially a drop in replacement for the WT7518D.  We talked about "better" ICs that could be used and they showed us a very robust catalog of ICs you personally would love to see used in every PSU.  But when it came down to why we don't see these used, it had to do with "nobody's asking for them, so we're not making (many) of them, so they're very expensive."

 

You know the HX, HXI and RMi use both a WT7502 and WT7518?  Weltrend actually makes one IC that can replace both of those, but because Corsair would be the only one using it, the cost would be so high that the two separate ICs made in volume is still much cheaper.

Yeah, that's the usual problem, sadly :(

And why don't they use it?
Because they always used the PS223...

And until some popular reviewers (like Jeremy and Aris) start bashing the bad protection ICs, nothing will change...

 

 

Well, at least some are forced to replace the old supervisiors with new ones...

Yeah, something like PS232F you mean?? 
Those were common back in the days but today nobody uses them, well except for FSP/be quiet...

 

The one protection IC that has the best UVP values was the PS224A I've found in an older Liteon 250W unit with aPFC...

That one is pretty close to ATX spec and AFAIR something around 11V for +12V UVP...

Many other chips sadly have something around 8-10V...

Well, Intel also worked with SITI on developing a new IC with the alternative sleep mode support. The only one I know of is the drop in replacement for the PS223.  I should ask them is they plan to update the other ICs.

Problem with that unit is the price.

Here in Germany the 650W Master Watt costs arounnd 75€ and the Bitfenix Formula is around 78€.

 

 

For 10€ less it might be something you can think about, at the moment its not really worth it...

It isn't, but I'm talking about the electrical performance, and build quality.

 

I believe the 550W semi-modular version is $55 in the US.

last week or 2 it was changed some. a new model came out. last time a unit was dropped in tier that I remember was a few months ago and that was a wave of 5+

you can not see the last edit date. I and many other people would assume this is outdated.
