An 11 year old Linksys Router still makes millions of USD each year

The Linksys WRT54GL is now an 11 year old Wireless 802.11a/b/g router and yet it still generates over a million dollars of revenue per year.

 



Witness the Linksys WRT54GL, the famous wireless router that came out in 2005 and is still for sale. At first glance, there seems to be little reason to buy the WRT54GL in the year 2016. It uses the 802.11g Wi-Fi standard, which has been surpassed by 802.11n and 802.11ac. It delivers data over the crowded 2.4GHz frequency band and is limited to speeds of 54Mbps. You can buy a new router—for less money—and get the benefit of modern standards, expansion into the 5GHz band, and data rates more than 20 times higher.

Despite all that, people still buy the WRT54GL in large enough numbers that Linksys continues to earn millions of dollars per year selling an 11-year-old product without ever changing its specs or design.

 

"To be honest, it somewhat baffles my mind," Linksys Global Product Manager Vince La Duca told Ars. But production won't stop any time soon as long as Linksys' suppliers, including chipmaker Broadcom, keep selling the parts needed to build the WRT54GL. "We'll keep building it because people keep buying it," La Duca said.

Linksys doesn't bother promoting the WRT54GL much. But La Duca mentioned the continued production of the WRT54GL recently when I interviewed him for a story on Linksys' project to let users install open source firmware on new routers without breaking the latest FCC anti-interference rules. A WRT54G was the first wireless router I ever purchased about a decade ago; I was surprised that Linksys still produces them, so I asked the company for more details.

Linksys would not release exact sales figures, but La Duca confirmed that it is still a "multi-million dollar SKU" each year. Linksys sells the WRT54GL for $69.99 on its website. In the UK you can find it at third-party retailers for about £40. At $69.99, Linksys would need to sell 28,576 each year to make $2 million in revenue. They probably sell more than that since it's available for $42.95 on Amazon, and La Duca didn't specify how many millions of dollars the product earns.

The WRT54GL and other routers in the WRT54G line have sold 31 million units in their 14-year lifetime. The WRT54GL is the only one still being manufactured and sold.

 

I find this quite stupid. I think they should update this model with 802.11 N MU-MIMO and offer this for the same price.

See it is so popular because it has the linux kernal in or on it however you would say it. You slap DD WRT on it and now I have a router with Qos, and soooo many other options for $20. It also is rock solid in stability. It may not be a 8 channel 90ghz beast but my god has and still does serve me well. Oh and you can put linux on it and use it as a PC

I have a newer router, but i keep my old blue box on a shelf next to my backup keyboard, mouse and other stuff. Its the one that has never failed me in a pinch, and it works great when we have LANs and need another switch.

my guess its one the ISP's give you when you first get wifi and you have to pay for it, but i didnt read the article or anything so maybe it says that or maybe it says its from people actually buying it because they want it

The second router I ever bought, even though I have moved up to an Edgerouter with Ubiquiti AP's and Netgear switches it still keeps a spot in my network for nostalgia's sake.

Yeah that is why they are so popular. The FCC said you can't do this anymore because you can create noise over frequencies that are designated for other things so linksys said no.

I've owned like 4 of those at least in various locations. Outdated now, but was a solid router. It did receive one update when Cisco bought Linksys that one time.

Quite a lot of them run a Linux based OS, or a Unix based OS.

 

When I was taking Networking classes, we had labs where we interfaced with command line routers and switches, not even browser based.

 

It was actually quite fun.

Yeah. I've done nothing with the knowledge I gained from my AS degree in network security.

 

I remember almost nothing now, and it's only been like 4 months.

 

YAY STUDENT LOANS FOR A DEGREE THAT GOT ME ALMOST NOWHERE.

I mean this is only bad because of the newer protocols and such but is not like it's job has basically been completely revamped. It doesn't takes much more tech than what it haves to do what it does.

 

Just saying you can't take this in terms of a personal PC or such where 10 years might as well be 100 years we don't have like 1000x larger tasks for it at consumer homes yet, it's basically still fine.
