Calling all Aussies! Don't stand for SLOW internet!!

Calling all Australian forum members!!!

http://www.change.org/nbn

If you haven't already please take the time to read over and sign this petition in order to fight for FASTER internet. The recent elections in Australia have seen a change of policy in the National Broadband Networks plans (NBN). Australia has a current lack of vision shown by the Liberal government's internet policy; Fibre to the Node (FTTN) just isn't going to cut it in this day and age!! With technological innovations being made every single day, and online content becoming more important and requiring more speed, our close to century old copper cabling needs to be replaced with a faster, more reliable, future proof, higher bandwidth and lastly FASTER cabling. Fibre Optic cabling provides just that, so why does the liberal government only want to have Fibre running to the node? WHO KNOWS? they might save a few dollars initially but anyone who lives anywhere in Australia (and i dare say the world) knows we are already pushing the limits of our current internet capability. This means that somewhere down the road they are going to have to dig up all the existing copper cables and replace them costing us (tax payers) even more money!

Here are just a few more links that may persuade you...

http://abbottsinternet.com.au/

http://howfastisthenbn.com.au/

The vast majority of people in Australia that has ever tried to stream HD content, play competitive Games online, Download (anything) will know that our internet is due for an upgrade.

Please show your support by signing this petition and showing you friends/family what we are missing out on. Thanks

If enough people show interest u can get anyone to change their minds, just look at xbox one's sharing policy.

I cant see why not :P its a world related issue and other governments should take notice.

These petitions mean nothing, In Australia a petition must have a physical signature and address on paper. Online petitions are useless.

People need to look at the bigger picture on the NBN. Australia is the 6th largest country by land size but the 53rd largest by poopulation.  People need to stop comparing our internet speed to Europe and small densly popultaed countries in Asia. It is irresponsible, pointless and a dangerous economic proposal for Australia.  I want faster internet just like everyone else. But I am not going to pay for it when it will ulitmately only benefit private companies.  The plan costs to cover the roll out will NOT be inline with the speed increase (even if we can afford the 100Mb plan).   Most users will go backwards with either data limits or plan price.

The coalitions NBN plan is just a slower approach, not a worse one. Forget the BS graphs full of assumed information.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

However the size of the country is bigger the population is not spread out. We are fairly compact in terms of used land. Also you will pay more with Abbotts internet. Any common sense can see that. The initial price difference between the two policies is very small as well as costing not very much (for the average person its a lot but for a government its not, to do the whole country the NBN was roughly $50 billion, they are building a highway in Melbourne worth $8 billion) anyway. The cost of the plans for the average person are very similar to what they are now, if you have a decent ISP, if I get the NBN I can get 25 times my speed for less then half the cost, or I can get 100 times my speed for the same price, and that is not to mention the upgrade coming in December that upgrades the speed to 1Gbps.

When you think about the coalitions plan they need to remove all the copper leading to the nodes with fibre. Then replace the nodes with new nodes. All while maintaining the copper which is worthless and has a inspection failure rate of 7 out of every 8 sections inspected. They have even started wrapping plastic shopping bags around the copper to try and make it last longer. Copper is expensive to replace and the current copper isn't worth a cent. Then when they want to increase the speed they then need to replace the nodes again and replace all the copper. So why not just skip the step of buying and installing an extra set of node and additional cost of copper maintenance.

There are some areas, which are most at need of a full replacement (which my area is one) will not get it because of the coalition. The copper in some areas is useless, my internet regularly drops out as it cannot handle it, at times it is even slower then dial up.

I like my internet speed   it's good enough for what I need.

The sites I visit from other countries can't go much faster than 1-2 MB/s, so there's no need for me to invest in more speed unless the rest of the world can catch up.

BUT, with that being said, there are other places in Australia that are completely crap in terms of speed.

If Australia can deliver at least 100mbit speed (12MB/s) to each person across the country I think it would be a great improvement.

Some people on the other hand do need gigabit speed for servers etc. so I think that needs to be an option for people living in the main cities.

And with this signing stuff, I don't think the Liberals will change their minds even if everyone in Australia signs it. They stated before they got voted in that they would put this project on hold.

I don't know about u but last time I checked games are getting bigger resolutions are getting bigger and the world is moving towards online game stores games are already 15gb there only going to get bigger and we are moving away from physical copies of media what if u want to watch a 4k movie the raw file no compressions that will degrade quality the full thing downloading or streaming that will be just rediculous maybe u might not need it now but u will in the future and that is what the nbn is about the future infrastructure of this country!

You probably mean FTTB ? FTTH gives you fiber right at your doorstep, there's nothing better out there if they are doing that.

Why would you resist FTTB (node) ? Its technically still fiber, its cheaper to break out one fiber line to more same speed copper lines (cat5 in this instance), switches are cheaper, takes less time to install, less time to fix problems, you still get the same speed. Im gonna go on a bit of a rant and say that your expectations are too high, you want everyone to have 1gig lines when you are just at 10mbps, that is not going to happen. Give it some time let them do the FTTB strategy, you will see the same benefits as if you ran fiber to your house and you will get your speed boost sooner rather than later. Once you make the jump to 100mbps then its time to think about gigabit.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

And you are going to pay for a 1 Gb/s connection. It is not the same price as the current adsl2+ plans. get the facts before you accuse people of being an idiot. If I was to swap to Labours NBN a plan it would cost me more, I would get less data and slower speed. In order for me to get a faster connection under Labours plans I would have to pay $30 ot $40 more a month for which I would not see any real benefits with the extra 6Mb/s it gives me and I would still have less data allowance per month.  Not everyone downloads porn or big games from america so why should I pay more for internet so you can? if you want it you pay the extra for it.

Contrary to all the BS you guys are sucking down over this the NBN, you don't just automatically get a 1Gb connection and unlimited data.  You have to pay based on the speed you want. Most people are going to be buying 12 or 25 Mbit plans because the 100Mb and 1Gb plans are ludicrously expensive.  Which means for majority of users the coalitions plan will suffice.

This is a very complicated issue, To understand it properly you need to consider Australias ecenomic outlook, future growth area's, captial expenditure vs GDP.  On top of that you need to understand that regardless of what country you are from, it is the people that pay for everything, so if you want FTTH you have to pay for it, you want FTTN you have to pay for it. Nothing is free.  I do not want to pay for faster internet when it will only benefit private comapanies who will charge me more for their services because they are using the NBN too.

I would have told them to bugger off. ;)

I do feel bad for Aussies, though. My BF3 bud is Australian and his internet makes crappy American internet (average, not niche fiber solutions that aren't widely avaliable) look godly.

Got some links to support any of that.  or is it just political propoganda?  I will wait for the actual treasury costings to come out before I accept what anyone says it will cost.

The population is spread out, we have 4M in melbourne then it is 1000K to sydney, 4000K to perth god knows how far to darwin and forget about hobart.  We are nothing, L.A has 80M in the same area as the ACT, the U.K has 90M in the same area as gippsland. we do not have the density of population to support the same infrastructure as those places. End of story.

As far as the rest goes you are making shit up:

reported faults for the last month averaged 1.3% not 7/8. I don't know where you got your figures from.

http://www.telstra.com.au/abouttelstra/commitments/customer-service-network-reports/network-reliability/

Again, there is more to it than just speed, It is a major infrastructure that has implications that reach far beyond downloading stuff.  It has risk factors and long term economic feasability studies have not been done.

Yet again you show how idiotic u are I pay $120/m adsl 6mb and 20mb down and it is the same for 100mb/s unlimited depending on what ISP u choose so don't say its super expensive when it's the same god damn price!!

Drop the insults, it only serves to make you look like a spoilt child.

It's not my fault you have a horribly expensive connection.  It is not the same price. With the current "proposed prices" (it's not availiable in my area) I would have to pay more than what I am to get less.  That is a fact, for some they will get faster for less for other they will more data for less. But for me I will have to pay more to maintain my current speed or improve it but I will still get less data.

This is not an opinion or assumption it is a fact, you have to get over the fact you have a poor connection or are being charged too much for it, that is not my fault and I refuse to pay a premium for my internet in order to subsidise yours.

EDIT: just checked, I pay $60 /month for 16Mb/s and 200GB data.  The NBN average cost for Tier1 (12Mb/s) is $83 if I want to maintain the same data allowance. So I need to pay $23 more per month to get a slower speed.  NOT THE SAME PRICE.

I have had 20mb down for the same price it doesn't matter that's still too slow for the future!!! 120/m isn't even that much I would more than happy to pay that for 100mb!! And this isn't just about now nbn is for future infrastructure people like u are going to cost this country more in the long run gtfo!!

You are right, it is about the fuiture more than now. but most people, Like me, are thinking about now and how it effects the future. We have a very precarious economy at the moment and if we move to an NBN that causes the price to rise, not just for the consumer but for buisness as well, then that has a negative impact on GDP.

As I said in earlier posts there is a lot more to it.  I would rather they slowed down and did it right the first time. And that means proper contracts, not rushed ones that screw over the subs, that means proper feasability studies that ensure we are not spending too much in areas that are not beneficial anyway. The program neeeds to account for everything. Unfortunately the current inception of the NBN assumed that telstra would deal with all the asbestos in the pits. Which if a proper feasability study was done would have shown this is not possible without adding to the overall cost. So the end result of rushing the current NBN was that sub contractors were sent into asbestos pits and no-one is going to look after them. It's bloody James Hardy all over again.  What we have now is a legal liability battle that could cost billions more in payouts and legal fees all because someone wanted the NBN right now and not in 5 years.

These are just some of my concerns, as a result I believe it will be people like me that ensure we actually have a future, not just one we can compete in.

Cheers
