First GTX 1080 Review is HERE!

FirstArmada

Dammit, I had a really good post about why I think AIBs will take a while to release and it didn't get posted.

First off, it's a new process. Yields are going to be very low and this is why both Nvidia and AMD are releasing smaller chips first (AMD's chips are even smaller so they should be easier to mass produce but still will run into early process problems). That coupled with the higher price of the reference launch card suggests that Nvidia's having a hard time mass-producing these cards.

That's why I'm quite confident that we'll have to wait at least 4 weeks from launch to see AIB cards priced below $700.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Computer having a hard time powering on? Troubleshoot it with this guide. (Currently looking for suggestions to update it into the context of <current year> and make it its own thread)

Dual 980 OC is faster in firestrike system overall by 1000 points. It's even faster than 1080 OC.

I admit, the 980 SLI in synthetics are probably faster. I meant to clarify I was speaking in terms of gaming performance.

Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 12.51.39 PM.png

Judging by the LTT graph. Battlefront offers a 46% increase in dollar per frame when comparing the 1080 vs SLI 980s and 36% increase when using Crysis 3 as a benchmarks.

Let's be conservative and that's a 30% increase for the same money.

We can also look at the 980Ti vs 1080 graphs. Using a price point of $550 for the 980Ti and $600 for the 1080. We can do a bit of maths. I'm going to use LTT Crysis 3 benchmarks.

Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 12.59.47 PM.png

So the 1080:

$600/40 frames = $15 per frame.

The 980Ti:

$550/30 = $18.33 per frame.

That is a healthy 22% increase. I was also quite generous with the pricing of the 980Ti. Most of them I see are hovering around the $580-$620 range.

in terms of will I buy one, the answer is heck no. I could get another 980ti for cheaper and it will be considerably faster than a 1080. My posting was more about the people that currently have high end cards and whether or not they should upgrade.

Current Build: Core i7 4790k @ 4.6, Asus Maximus VII Hero, Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400mhz 8gb (2x4gb), GTX 980ti, NZXT Kraken X61, Fractal Define R5  EVGA Supernova B2 850w, Some 300gb hard drive.

That cup size is almost creepy in how specific it is.

What the hell, we're not even talking about hardware anymore.

I'll upgrade when Polaris is out since I can't afford GM204.
