It finally happen everyone, Time Warner Cable has been bought out by Charter (who is currently my ISP provider).

Charter Communications purchased Time Warner Cable in a deal estimated at $78 billion, and today the US Department of Justice and Federal Communications Commission gave the acquisition the green light.

However, that is not all. For this to happen the FCC has given Charter a few caveats to deal with.

The DoJ says Charter is not allowed to impede access to streaming content, for one. FCC chairman Tom Wheeler says Charter will not be allowed to impose data caps or charge usage-based prices, nor will it be able to charge interconnection fees.

I don't really know how to feel about this besides saying there is even less competition, well what was left of it anyway :dry:

The US really does have more of a monopoly problem than Australia. <That's what I think about the buyout.

Wonder what Charter's internet packages are like, or if they're any faster than TWC for the same price bracket. Would be quite nice.

Charter has 1 internet package, they don't do tiered internet speeds. Its 60/4

As if Charter will honor any requirements laid out by the FCC or DoJ, they'll just pay to make it the way they want it after the fact.  And 78 billion...wow...

Cox is more reliable than both, and often decently priced.  Charter is a step below and not exactly structured with tiers, and TWC at the bottom of that hierarchy.  Comcast is a step lower, Verizon is a step above them all in terms of performance, except in price, where they lack.  AT&T is, and always will be a joke(To me) with their opting out of being tracked, and still tracking people as well as lying about their fiber rollouts.  Preferably I'd like municipal or Google Fiber, which I am getting the latter, thankfully!

$78 Billion?  Wow, I don't imagine deals of that size happen very often...

Our internet package is their charter spectrum 60/4, it is mostly reliable in our area and not shared with our neighbors thank god. I did have a few hiccups  with their internet just stop working and had to completely turn off the modem and router to get it back up. Also when I marathon a  crap ton of Netflix they refuse stream it for the rest of the day >:(

And I'm SURE that the new mega company will obey the FCC. And certainly won't lobby congress to cut the FCC's new found nuts off.

 

Or just ignore the FCC entirely.

This is interesting. I have TWC in my area, currently paying $35 for 15/1(and TWC's highest tier here is 50/5 for $65). 60/4 for $40 would be great.

The US government should have blocked this deal, monopolistic mega-companies, in this case an ISP, do nothing but rake in money while rural areas are left in the dust and the telecoms infrastructure gets older and older. This has and still is a major issue for the UK, where the telecom infrastructure is owned by one company who's interests they prioritise. An ideal scenario would be then never being privatised in the first place, or the infrastructure remaining publicly owned, as it is with the National Grid.

2 speeds. 60/4 or 100/5 .. If you live in STL you get 100/4 for the same price as 60/4. Upload speed is my only gripe. I still host a MC server for 3 people, L4D2 server, and Plex on my server. Just like with any company the promo is for 12 months and your bill goes from (60/4)$39.99 to $59.99. No contract. Save your self some dough and purchase a WiFi router. Modem is free though. No data cap.

I have some issues with this merger:

We've been an TWC customer since the early 2000. We've been in their system fo so long that it was originally Adelphia Communications when we started service. My current package is 200/20. Charter offers no such package, only up to 100/10 and they provide their own modems, and I use my own. My package price is $34.99 a month for the 200 tier. Moving to charter will force me to pay more, at an lower speed, and use whatever junk modem they provide me with.

Charter is in my area, and they offer speeds starting at 100 Mbps for 39.99 a month.  (This is southern Illinois BTW)

I mean charter is a fuck ton better than TWC in my area (well where I grew up... Things are a bit better in Madison).

 

TWC offers a 6/.5 plan for the same price as the charter 60/4 plan. ATT offers 6/1 at 10 dollars more...

 

Fuck...
