Should a noob buy Dark Souls 3?

IncompetentProdigy

I have been wondering if I should buy DS3 I have played the WItcher 3 and really enjoyed it. Never played any other games in the series.

What do?

I recommend playing Dark Souls 1 and 2 first.

Demon's Souls first actually but that's exclusive to the PS3.

If only to have a better understanding of mechanics and lore appreciation.

One thing you will learn playing these games is that they are not hard games.

You just have to git gud.

Yeah, I'd recommend playing Dark souls 1 and 2 first

they are challenging to play, but it's in the matter of learning and being careful. you certainly can't play it like you did with witcher 3.

What does The Witcher have to do with Dark Souls?

Nevertheless , I suggest you wait a little until we have proper impressions of the game. Even then , I'd suggest trying out the first Dark Souls game to see if you enjoy this kind of gameplay.

Play the Dark Souls 1 and 2 first, much like what everyone else says.

IMHO, you can be the noobest of noobs and still enjoy Dark Souls IF you find it to your liking enough to invest in playing it.

DarkSouls 1+2 are an Insult on PC. Laughable, technical Jokes. Absolutly pathetic.

I would wait and see what the lazy FROM Devs pull off with the 3rd Game bevore spend Money on it.

DS1 was locked at 30fps which I could barely stomach to get through. DS2 runs at a solid 60fps and looks "OK". The Scholar of the first sin DS2 upgrade does add better overall visuals, plus DLC content.

The thing about the DS series, IMO, is it is a game that stands on it's own merits. Graphics and FPS is NOT all that makes up a good game. There are plenty of really good games out there that don't have the best graphics and this series is one of them.

So yeah, DS1 was an insult on PC but still enjoyable (based on gameplay alone, for me anyways), but DS2 was fine on PC. Runs at 60fps and this game is not about the graphics, it's about the gameplay/lore. ;)

To the OP; DS is a very different game series to most (IMO). It will punish you for mistakes much more so than most other games. You need to get good at it and be smart with how you approach it. If you have friends that have played the series and can join in with co-op to help you, that makes a HUGE difference. If you try to go through all on your own without help... well, all I have to say is; good luck. lol.

I'm on a 2nd play through of DS2 right now after upgrading with the Scholar of the first sin update. Very much enjoying it, but also being reminded again how this game hands your ass to you if you get too cocky or if you're not too careful.

So yes, would recommend playing through DS1 and 2 first. ;)

I'll give you DS1, but DS2 had a great port. Ran well and looked good, unlike the first game's port which was locked to ~720p and 30fps. The DSFix mod did help a lot, though.

Play DS1 first to see if you will enjoy the combat.  It is not for everyone, think Monster Hunter but more punishing.  It is all about animation and timing and can be very rewarding.  DS1 can be picked up for next to no money on sale (I think I got it for like $2).

Also be warned the lore is very deep, but very subtle.  You have to play through the first act of the game before getting any coherent direction besides go ring some bells.   While I wouldn't recommend doing a ton of research online about where to go, a little at the start can be very helpful.  My first play through I thought the catacombs was the first area of the game and assumed it was the infamous difficulty of the game, when in fact I had just made a wrong turn.

But as people said it is painful to play on PC due to crummy optimization, get a game pad and blighttown runs at like 5 FPS no matter what.  (also my game pad would not work with my HOTAS Plugged in which was weird and easy to resolve once diagnosed but be aware it can be finicky).

How so? It has quite a nice array of graphical options and if the recommended specs are real should run great even on older low end PCs.

Ok. Totally makes it unplayble piece of crap. Some games work better with one kind of interface, do you also think that racing sims are crap because they work better with racing wheels instead of mouse and keyboard?

Where's this coming from? Early beta tests for DS3 on the PS4 were quite good. Game ran well and looked very good (fixed the graphical glitches/anomalies from Blood Borne and improved the engine).

Like I said I get the feeling it will be a shit port. Seems the game will be locked to 60fps. As they said when the whole 30fps lock was going around.  " Forget what you've heard. #DarkSouls3 will run at 60 FPS on PC! http://giphy.com/gifs/3ornk110bmCDLhIDV6  "

I'm sorry but if a pc game is locked to 60fps, then already it's a shit port.
Like I said though, it's just a feeling. I hope I'm wrong though.

Being locked at 60 is FAAAAAR better than being locked at 30. ;)

If you're that uptight about not being able to run more than 60fps and potentially lose out on playing an otherwise great game, then suit yourself.

Nope, this isn't the only reason. Me seeing the game being locked to 60 kinda just confirms my doubts, as a lot of games that have any sort of frame lock on them tend to be pretty bad ports. Fallout 4 as a new example, an awful port, which is also locked. Yes you can unlock it but what happens then? The game's engine goes nuts. A locked framerate is never a good sign.

To confirm what I am saying, if the game releases and runs well, has a good interface, keybinds etc. then being locked to 60 won't bother me to much.

Being locked to 60 at the moment though simply puts doubts in my mind, I'm pretty sure I will be proven right, though hopefully not.

Play Dark Souls 1 but don't bother with 2. DS 2 was done by a different director. It's still a competent game but they missed the point of the series and made it difficult simply for the sake of it.

I agree that it is better to play at least the first Dark Souls. You can find the "prepare to die edition" cheap and you can get the idea of what the series is about. It is not like you can't start with Dark Souls III, in fact, if you like the first one you will probably enjoy all of them, but if you don't like it, at least you will save some money, you don't have to wait for the game being released and you can wait and check the game once is released..
