Dell’s Skylake XPS 13, Precision workstations now come with Ubuntu preinstalled

In the Precision guise, the system can include Xeon-branded processors and Quadro-branded GPUs. The Precision 3510, 7510, and 7710 ranges will also be available, giving buyers a wide range of sizes, weights, and specifications.

Dell is currently selling Developer Edition XPS 13s with Ubuntu, choosing that configuration makes it cheaper. This has been done before, it was a on and off thing. I feel this is a step in the right direction.

It's neat, but in some ways I can see this causing issues. Like someone buys one that has Ubuntu (not knowing it has Ubuntu) with the intent of PhotoShop, and then they get it to find they have a brick.

My guess is that Mint is more like a community project whereas Ubuntu has an established company(Canonical) to help make these business-y decisions.

I bought a dell developer laptop, a dell xps13 with ubuntu pre-installed, so it works at least a little bit.

When I bought mine, you had to order them, they werent in stores, so you would have to specifically choose the developer edition. You would be really hard pressed to accidentally get the developer edition.

well those kinds of laptops (just like the macbook air) are great for developing stuff, since they are light and pretty fast for what they need to do

Anyway, preinstalled Ubuntu is still better than preinstalled FreeDOS, which I've seen on many cheaper laptops. In both cases you would need to get Windows 10 later, if you want to use some applications, but if you don't need support for those application, Ubuntu is at least usable for everything else.

You wouldn't need to get windows 10 later, its an ubuntu edition for people who don't want windows 10 in the first place (If you did, just choose the windows version). because its better for many types of software development. That is the entire point.

Not necessarily. I doubt the price for both versions is same, and if I already have Windows 10 licence, why would I pay extra, when I can just install Windows on my own and use my own licence key.

Yea, no.

Its actually called the developer edition. For software developers. Who prefer linux for developing software. And no the price isnt the same, but why would it be? This isnt a cheap laptop, and the fact that it uses linux is NOT to save money, its target at people who want/need linux for their daily tasks.
