my problem with recommending AMD graphics cards is that if an un\optimized game will usually run worse on AMD Cards.

Examples:

Fallout 4

Dying Light

Batman: Arkham Knight

Shadow of Mordor

COD: AW

and many more.

i get that in some cases like GTX 970 vs R9 390, the R9 390 is more powerful but more games run better on the GTX 970.

how do you choose between them?

Sure you don't mean the R9 390 rather than the 380? 380 isn't powerful than the 970, for that price I wish it was though lmao

Don't you mean 390?

Also, AMD can't fix developer's incompetence.

Yeah, so that's why you should always consider what you will be doing with your PC and that's why you should always ask the OP what he will be playing rather than assuming

It's well known that most titles only work because of the back end work from AMD and Nvidia via drivers. Have you ever wondered why drivers labeled "GTA 5 Ready Driver", etc. would be necessary if these games were well designed and properly optimized to run on current drivers and hardware before release?

amd is a bigger company, don't tell me they didn't have the money :)

Nvidia just knows what they are doing and it works for them. Only recently did AMD drivers become a bit competent so they started gaining back some ground.

But then they released Fury X which can't compete with 980ti under water, it's just a joke.

Arkham Knight: Terrible PC port

Dying Light: Terrible PC port on release, after a patch it ran quite smooth (even though it is was a demanding game) on a GTX 970 and on a AMD 7950

Shadow of Mordor: Ran smoothly on the 970 and the 7950

Fallout 4: Again terrible PC port (or a typical Bethesda game for that matter)

Didn't play a COD since the first one, so I don't know about that.

Shadow of Mordor was a broken port? Huh? lol

I don't think AW was broken. BO3 was tho

they don't anymore :^)

Well I guess they know what they're doing *cough* 56 ROPs

I gotta agree about the Fury X though. It has potential but AMD just came out with it too late and only now is it worth getting at its current MSRP.

I do not agree with "Only recently did AMD drivers become a bit competent", been using AMD (and ATi) alongside with Nvidia cards in different systems, and both companies have periods of "meh" drivers (like Nvidia lately), but overall the driver expirience was quite good.

i had hd3870 and drivers were bad all the damn time.

In what universe is Shadow of Mordor unoptimized? That is one of the games where the 970 and 980 get annihilated by the 390 and 390x. The response to unoptimized games is dont buy them. If people dont behave like crack addicts and vote with their wallet, we will stop getting broken games. The answer is not to buy GPU from another vendor. If the problem were with AMD, then you would have a point.

well, that's exactly when nvidia was gaining ground, I can't remember how many 8800gt's and 9800gt's I have seen in builds during that time. Customers are always loyal to products that work, look at Apple.

Fallout 4 runs better on the 970 yes. But it also runs ass on my 980Ti. The frame rate is never ever stable, and it even drops as low as 30 when i'm in tall buildings looking down on the landscape.

Dying light runs like ass, but the 970 isn't noticeably better than the 290 in 1440p and it's a bit behind the 290x. I couldn't find a 390 review for that game.

Shadow of Mordor runs smooth on both brands. In Guru3Ds review of the 390 from PowerColor, the 390 even matched the 980.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/powercolor_radeon_r9_390_pcs_8gb_review,16.html

Batman: Arkham Knight runs like ass on all systems, once again, including my 980Ti.

COD:AW. Once again, the 970 is faster than the 290 but slower than the 290x. No 390 benchmark found. But if you were referring to the newer black ops 3, that game runs like ass as well. It runs so poorly, that Treyarch are in the process of patching out high and ultra settings if you don't have a 4GB Vram GPU. As they coded the game so fantastically bad, that the game goes batshit crazy when it doesn't recognize 8GB of total memory as that is the amount present in consoles.

Motherboard: Asus X570-E
CPU: 3900x 4.3GHZ

Memory: G.skill Trident GTZR 3200mhz cl14

GPU: AMD RX 570

SSD1: Corsair MP510 1TB

SSD2: Samsung MX500 500GB

PSU: Corsair AX860i Platinum
