American pharma CEO rises price of HIV medication by 5500% then buys $2,000,000 Wu Tang album

Martin Shkreli, CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals (USA) and capitalism poster boy, raised the price of Daraprim, a drug used to treat HIV patients, fifty fold and then proceeded to pay 2 million US dollars for an exclusive copy of Wu Tang Clan's new album which will not be released to public, and he hasn't even bothered to listen it yet.

When Shkreli was questioned over the price increase of the life saving medication he replied,

“I think healthcare prices are inelastic. I could have raised [the price of Deraprim] higher for my shareholders, which is my primary duty. Again – no one wants to say it, no one’s proud of it – but this is a capitalist society, capitalist system with capitalist rules, and my shareholders expect me to maximize profits. Not minimize them, or go half, or go 70%, but to go to 100% of the profit curve that we’re all taught in MBA class.”

To give you an idea, the price of Daraprim is Australia is AUD$12.99 for 50 tablets. In the USA, where Shkreli has the sole rights to produce Daraprim, the cost is around US$45,000 for 60 tablets.

At the end of the day, Shkreli has not done anything illegal under US law, but he could at least tell us if the album was any good.

did you get "capitalism poster boy" from that young turks video :) i think i watched one of their videos on this where they called him that.

Don't know what "young turks" are, but this guy embodies exactly what raw capitalism is about (in my opinion at least).

I believe another company already stepped in and is offering a competing drug for free.

I believe most countries have some form of universal healthcare...

its a youtube channel that did a video about this and they called him a poster boy, but i completely agree. this sick fuck spends $2,000,000 on a toy that he will never touch as he willingly turns a blind eye to the people who will die because of this. this person has no morality and embodies what is wrong with america, 1% of the population own 99% of the people. this is the kind of shit you would see in an apocalypse movie.

Haha, eh. I think if he makes the money he should be free to spend it on whatever he wants. I also believe the shareholders are somewhat to blame; I'm sure not a single one of them is complaining. You might as well say the same thing about every single drug manufacturer. Hell, you could go even further and blame yourself. Why don't you donate all of your disposable income to charity?

Don't know what "young turks" are, but this guy embodies exactly what raw capitalism is about (in my opinion at least).

I don't think he's the embodiment of raw capitalism, but rather that he's making a statement as to what's wrong with the system. The fact that he's allowed to potentially harm so many people and legally get away with it is unjust. Where do we draw the line? Do we let people get hurt - let people die - just to protect IP? Or do we drop IP - halt innovation - to save a few lives?

As I see it, capitalism is great. It's a tried and true system and has gotten us this far, but much like we learned nearly a century ago, it's a vicious beast that needs to be controlled. For the economy of the States to be truly prosperous and beneficial for all, it requires a fair level of regulation, but it needs to be adaptable, something easily changed when it needs to be.

And I don't mean to attack IP in the slightest, IP is necessary for innovation, but too much protection will stifle innovation, and even hurt people. Point and case? This topic.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

The reason why capitalism has worked so far is because it has been mixed with socialism. This is what happens when you let capitalism creep into areas it shouldn't be allowed in. Keep going like this as we will go back to child labour, bowls of gruel instead of wages and unaffordable medical treatment.

Capitalism is all about having an elite few at the top squeezing all they can from those below them. Every now and then, if they are generous, they would throw a few scraps to those below to stop them from revolting.

That's the way I see it anyway.
