Xeon or skylake i5?

Strom

I have r9 fury but no other components and i cant choose. Do i buy i5 6600k and of course z170 or do i go with xeon e3-1231-v3 or xeon e3-1241-v3? I save 35€ with 1231 and 10€ with 1241. I do sometimes record videos and play mostly WoW at 1440p. I might also start streaming in the future. One option is getting xeon e3-1230-v5 and use all the nice skylake features like usb 3.1 (in this option i lose 15€). If i buy 6600k i'll oc it to about 4.2ghz. What do you guys recommend?

I'm Linus too. (:

Does oc:d i5 last 4-6 years?

Its hard to see that far in the future at least for me, but yeah its safe to say it would. The Xeon is better at streaming & video edition than the 6600K because of those extra threads.

Get the 6600k. It's superior IPC, as well as OCing capabilities will make it superior to the Xeon, even with HT factored in.

with stock speeds single core performance is 1230 v5 > 6600k > 1241 v3 > 1231 v3 and multi core is 1230 v5 > 1241 v3 > 1231 v3 > 6600k

Unless you're doing some heavy video editing, I'd go with the i5-6600K. While Hyperthreading can theoretically help with streaming or recording, I've seen no evidence (on my own system or otherwise) that an overclocked 6600K would struggle with any of that, plus you'd have the added benefit of superior features, connectivity, and per-core performance.

And by the way, I'd say shoot for 4.4–4.5 GHz, as even that seems fairly effortless if you have reasonably good cooling.

Even if you don't OC it it will last that long.

Go with Xeon!

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

The v5 Xeons do use LGA1151 but will only work with the C230 chipset.
