Xeon or skylake i5?

Strom

The v5 Xeons do use LGA1151 but will only work with the C230 chipset.

Yea i just checked that and seems i have to ho with 1231 or 1241

I'd take the 6600k, WoW should like the 6600k's clockspeed way more than the Xeon's hyperthreads. Plus you're on a much better platform for future upgrades with Z170 + DDR4.

Take the i5, because it's more powerful. For playing games, recording and / or streaming you'll need power, and that means you should take the i5.

The Xeon is server hardware, that means you would need another mainboard, and so on.

It will or it wont last that long?

It will.

Just look back 5 years ago, Sandy Bridge came out. The owners of the Sandy Bridge i5s and i7s are still happy today. I owned an i3 back then and ended up upgrading my whole system (sad but meh)

A good reason a system like that lasts long is because most applications don't really demand more power than that. Some may disagree but that is the case ever since multi-core CPUs came out. The thing is, most applications aren't optimized to fully utilize multiple threads on CPUs. Some apps would run better in CPUs with higher frequencies compared to ones with multiple threads instead

The i5 6600k, I imagine, will perform only slightly better than the Xeon E3-1230 v5 just because of the slightly higher frequency.

If you're talking about future proofing, the Xeon would last you longer just like any i7 would.

Here's a video of Linus and Luke talking about it. If it's the same architecture, the performance would be virtually the same given that they also have the same CPU frequencies.

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

You dont need another mainboard for some hashwell xeons. Those are lga 1150 and work with the same chipsets.

Zen

Meditate on it

If it just was upon us. (:

Well if zen were released i would buy it without a doubt because if no one buys amd and there is only intel on the market then price of the cpus would skyrocket.

Not necessarily - that's according to the Intel motherboard division, not the CPU dev team. What that means is that their own motherboards will not support it however 3rd party vendors like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte etc may support the CPU's on their boards.

Well im not taking the risk. Let someone else try it first. (:
