Arstechnica reviews 10$ Walmart Phone. Any good?

Calm down dude. He said 45 dollars to manufacture, not 45 dollars to develop.

 

His post seemed like it was implying the same thing people thought when the Google Glass thing got dismantled and priced.

for $10, that's fucking cheap.

I'd buy one just to use it on nights out.

Not sure if it will last the night, maybe.... (as in battery) Probably will if you just call with it.

It doesn't cost just $45 to get made. They don't just send mock-ups to their manufacturers to make the phone. They have to do actual work in their R&D to get prototypes made, then decide on a final product, which costs a shit ton of money that they need to make back, as well as their "Apple" premium markup. IT's way more complicated than that, but tl;dr no it doesn't just cost $45 to make.

 

 

EDIT: Also, I guarantee you either LG or Walmart are taking a hit with these phones - probably Walmart as they will rely on the phone to bring back customers to shop at the store. I also bet the phone is loaded with some Walmart app or some such.

It costs 45 to make. 45 dollars to go from raw material to a display. I'm not talking marketing, premium, etc. I'm talking raw cost to manufacture a single display.

Well they are making money some way. I just find it hard to believe it is on the hardware.

Tracfone takes the initial hit to reduce this phone to $30, but then Walmart takes the hit to get the "exclusive" price of $10. I'm not sure what the actual cost is since there isn't a unlocked carrier free version.

one that I wouldn't mind getting stolen...

just throw in one of those 15PhP prepaid sim cards in there and load it up...

Funny thing is, I have a phone that looks pretty much exactly like that! It's not "good" by the standards of most users on here, but it's sufficient for my needs since all I use it for is calling and the occasional text.

People are going to use these for hacking and tinkering. Look it is powerful enough to run KitKat and it is a whole phone sounds like an easy way to steal chip credit cards

People are going to use these for hacking and tinkering. Look it is powerful enough to run KitKat and it is a whole phone sounds like an easy way to steal chip credit cards

Battery life is obv garbage and apps crash a lot, but for it to be a phone with YouTube access and music playback it still works dandy.
