T-mobile will let you stream video for free

T-Mobile on Tuesday said it will let customers stream video on their smartphones for free.

"Binge On," will allow you to stream videos from Netflix, HBO Go and more than a dozen other services. The company will work to add more streaming services over time.

The video is optimized so it won't waste unnecessary data, said CEO John Legere. He added that the service is a free addition to customers.

To me, it's about dang time. I've been expecting this ever since their unlimited music streaming was announced.

Included among the 24 apps that will be supported at launch are Netflix, Hulu, Showtime, HBO Go and Sling TV. Two noticeable absences from the list are YouTube and Twitch, which are hugely popular in the gaming community. It wouldn’t be surprising to see T-Mobile add those two streaming websites to its list, however.

Most if not all of the apps listed, you're not able to download from. Unless they offer offline access but even still that's not a true download.

No, you're capturing the stream, not downloading. There's a difference.

This ^, that's why all those 3rd party youtube download sites were created, if streaming equaled download then you wouldn't need those.

Right, you are performing something illegally....... That is not what this is, and doing that will ruin this for everyone. 

 

Streaming has functions in place to limit the data being sent from the servers to your phone. The netflix stream you pull up on your iphone, will not use the same amount of data as if you downloaded the file directly, or, streamed from your desktop. When they weighed out whether or not they could do this they calculate based on what you need on your mobile device screen for it to look good. 

 

Same as how Tmo has unlimited mobile data, but not unlimited tethering/wifi hotspot. Because, they do all these unlimited things assuming you don't abuse the system, and use them as designed. (please don't sidetrack with the whole "its not really unlimited", that's not the point I'm making).

Also screen recording isn't a feasible thing on a phone you would need something to capture the video.

That's a long time! I've been with them for 2 years. I switch from Verizon because I just couldn't deal with them anymore.

I need to switch to Tmobile, Sprint service in Phoenix is a terrible terrible thing.

it got a little difficult when T-mobile didn't have the iPhone, so I had to buy them off contract for full price, but we got through it. John Legere is the best thing that's happened to them

Their LTE service is spotty from what I hear around here. I live in East Mesa and they have it here and I almost switched to them but I don't like their pricing. Lately though it's been pretty competitive since they are pretty much at war with T-Mobile lol. T-Mobile is just getting better and better though so it's a good thing I stayed.

I just realized we have been with AT&T for over 20 years so they give us a 35% discount ever month. But free streaming video sounds crazy. Also @babadoctor I see your point. If you use the Tor browser you can just download the whole video as if you were streaming it and when you stream something and let the whole video load when you go out of wifi you can still watch the whole thing.

I just realized we have been with AT&T for over 20 years so they give us a 35% discount ever month. But free streaming video sounds crazy. Also @babadoctor I see your point. If you use the Tor browser you can just download the whole video as if you were streaming it and when you stream something and let the whole video load when you go out of wifi you can still watch the whole thing.

Yeah that's a PC thing though, nit really a thing you can do easily on your phone.

Their LTE service is spotty from what I hear around here. I live in East Mesa and they have it here and I almost switched to them but I don't like their pricing. Lately though it's been pretty competitive since they are pretty much at war with T-Mobile lol. T-Mobile is just getting better and better though so it's a good thing I stayed.

Yeah it is I actually live in west Mesa closer to Tempe and it's really spotty.

To bad there is both an IOS and Android version of it.

Not as easy to do those versions are really terrible to use.

Nah they are super easy. The IOS version is just like safari except a tad slower but has many more options. No set up needed.

Videotron allows you to stream your subscription music for free (not use your data), and that is offers in most phone plans with data. I know it is not Netflix, (which by the way T-Mobile will probably throttle), but its something.
