Also screen recording isn't a feasible thing on a phone you would need something to capture the video.

They will add YouTube just like how they added SoundCloud to the unlimited music. Now if only they would add unlimited Ingress data.

One slight limit, however, all video streaming through this program (called Bringe On, which is only for some services) is downscaled to 480p.

Please take note that this service, dubbed "Binge On", only counts at 480p. T-Mobile argues that the difference between 1080p and 480p on mobile devices is negligible given the screen size and viewing distances that users typically have. 

 

I agree to a certain extent that the difference is negligible, but it is noticeable when you really look at it. Still though, mobile streams trump many cable/satellite channels quality-wise imo. Overall I'd say that this is a good change, I like free things. 

 

On a side note, I do remember unlimited data being a thing. Its amazing that advertisers are quick to point out that you're getting '50% more data' for free when just a few years ago you got infinitely more for less money.

I'll try it this Sunday and see how well it works, I'm well past my 5GB limit on one of my lines. 480p is kind of irritating though, not happy about that...

 

Edit: Also I'm not happy about the lack of YT and Twitch. I hope net neutrality kicks John Legeres ass, its almost 2016, 128kbps throttling and selective "full speed" services is just a fucking joke.

Unfortunately.

From a network's perspective, it does. Streaming is just downloading the video and then deleting it.

 

 

Streaming has functions in place to limit the data being sent from the servers to your phone. The netflix stream you pull up on your iphone, will not use the same amount of data as if you downloaded the file directly, or, streamed from your desktop. When they weighed out whether or not they could do this they calculate based on what you need on your mobile device screen for it to look good.

Actually, streaming and downloading the same file would end up requiring exactly the same amount of data. Streaming is not magic.

 

 

This ^, that's why all those 3rd party youtube download sites were created, if streaming equaled download then you wouldn't need those.

You don't actually need the YouTube downloading sites. It just makes things easier for the less knowledgeable person. What I used to do before discovering YouTube-DL was that I would just let a YouTube video buffer completely, then I opened up the Firefox cache folder, found the correct file and renamed it. That was seriously all you had to do in order to get the exact file you just streamed as a regular video file on your computer. That is evidence enough by itself to prove that streaming is downloading.

Most services such as NetFlix adds DRM in order to prevent you from just grabbing the entire movie from your cache, but that does not change the simple fact that when you stream something, you are downloading it.

I knew there would be a catch. If something sounds too good to be true then it probably is. 480p vs 1080p is a very big difference, even on phones and especially on tablets.

It's good to have the option of 480p for "free" and higher resolution on your regular data cap though.

Eh.. knew there'd be a catch. Still thought that's not too bad. On a screen like that although there is a somewhat noticeable difference for most I'm sure it won't be that bad. It's worth the trade off really. I don't mind it especially considering if it's something I want to watch in 1080p I can just wait until I'm home and do it there.

Never heard of something that was illegal to download.

 

The only way something will be illegal to download is if you're using torrent to do it. Because you're uploading at the same time, thus becoming one of the people actually breaking the law (as distribution of copyrighted material is what is illegal)

Not in my country, and even in USA it's a technicality because they only go after people who upload. If you for example get Maxthon (web browser that can directly download from any flash container) and go to an embedded video somewhere, no one will give two tenths of a fuck if you download something, they have bigger fish to fry and probably not even looking for those footprints.

 

As for streaming itself, it falls under the recent German supreme court's ruling that "no one can be punished for simply viewing anything online". This is the case everywhere (short of dictatorships) in reality, Germany is just the only country that has put it into words, there is simply no way anyone's going to get fined or targeted for streaming or viewing any content online.

Seems like these old content providers are struggling to stay relevant in the face of youtube. This actively works against youtube because it has places like HBO scared.

 

Oh well, I have unlimited data from 2002, I use 20+ gigs a month for $60

I beg to differ, one time when my internet was out I went to a mall, used the free wifi to watch a video and as I did I used the screen capture feature of my Z2 to record the video so I could rewatch it at home.  (The video was a recipe for chinese food that I was trying to make)

 

I think all the phones in the Z series of sony can capture video from the screen.

Most if not all of the apps listed, you're not able to download from. Unless they offer offline access but even still that's not a true download.

 

Not from the client's perspective but it is as far as the server and ISP (or mobile network operator, in this case) are concerned. Calling something a "true download" is utter bollocks; if you can stream it, you can download it from that source one way or another too.

 

Just because those apps don't have a user-friendly UI control to write that data locally doesn't mean the capability isn't there. From a networking standpoint, data going down-stream is a download, regardless of what the client does with it.
