Not sure about the ASRock Extreme 9 (12+2 phase), doesnt seem to be too many opting for that board... although going by the VRM setup, it should be the ideal board for the 220w TDP CPUs as its power delivery should be rock steady, maybe even more consistent and stable then the top of the line ASUS boards.

i have one in a crosshair V formula Z and no problem at all, but i have also a gold rated 750w psu and 240 AIO wc, and im not certain that every one that complains about them have the right set up for them

Pretty sure the unlocked Skylake SKU's ship without a cooler. Though, you are right. The DC stock coolers ship with a copper base, and has improved slightly over the last gen. I still would never put a heavy AVX load on them (Prime 95, LinX, etc) but for gaming, it should still suffice as long as the clocks have not been touched. I can take my G3258 to 4.5 on the stock cooler, and never pass 72C on Prime95 in an ITX case. It has the same copper base DC cooler as the 4790k. Granted, G3258 does not have AVX instruction sets, so take that as you will.

That 8 core, 16 thread Zen might just be a rumor at this point. The more information we get, the more it is pointing out that 4 cores, 8 threads will be the max we see. As much as i would like to be wrong, the evidence is pretty clear after looking at the FPU information, and how the WCCF writer keeps calling the SMT threads "cores". So the 8 cores rumored by WCCF has always been SMT included. The reason AMD had those lower thermal limits, is because AMD's temperatures were way inaccurate. If your FX is running 60C, it is more realistically running 80C. That is a discussion for another thread though.

i don't see why AMD couldn't release a 8C/16T Chip for the high end to hopefully compete with the intel parts at a discounted rate and then just laser cut them down for the 4C/8T variants  im am personally hoping for a 8C/16T so i can build a system that will suit my needs for another 5 years

What current rumours? I see consumer grades hitting 8 cores 16 threads.

All information have pointed for a 8c/16t CPU processor. Sure we will see cutdown to 4c/8t, maybe 6c/12t too.

it IS possible for AMD to sport 8 cores -> 16threads. because ZEN based FX will NOT feature onboard graphics.

So all the die space taken up by a traditional iGPU will be "free" to be used for more CPU cores.

 

Just look at X99... as soon as Intel removed the iGPU, they could slap more cores on there.

It is simply a matter of die area they can utilize for CPU cores... in Haswell and Skylake, the iGPU is nearly 40% of the die...

now 40% is A LOT of space...

that leaves 60% space left for Cache, cores, memory controller, video decoder/encoder and whatnot....

They do ship without a cooler. I only contested the idea that Intel only makes crap coolers, which is supported by the fact the 4790K's stock cooler was pretty good for what it was.

 

I think we'll see 8-core chips, but I don't expect to see them for less than $700. Low enough to undercut the 5960X, but high enough for decent margins, and I frankly don't see AMD spitting in its fans' faces with only offering quad-cores. Maybe the 6 and 8-core enthusiast line will come out a couple months after the quads arrive, but I very much expect AMD to deliver on an 8-core Zen CPU.

The 4790K's in my dad's machine. I myself am running a 4.7GHz 2600K until Zen and Kaby Lake are out along with AI and Pascal so I can have my pick of upgrades. The stock cooler was perfectly fine and quiet when we were using it for MOBO testing before running the liquid cooling.

Of course it's "cool and quiet" when it's idling like hell and underclocked. If you game with it however it sounds like a Fermi GPU and reaches 90c easily without any OC. It's a shit cooler that's only used for validating that the chip can run (you cannot even validate full speed as it will thermo throttle for testing. It's useless.

 

Intel not including it in the k series is fine, but Skylake is overpriced to hell, so the cost savings Intel has on the missing cooler is not benefitting the customer. In that case, they might as well include it for a backup solution.
