JLENS Blimp Breaks Free

So, remember those giant blimps the government was going to put up for "defense purposes" that could supposedly spy on us?

Well one of them has broken free.

 

 

BREAKING NEWS: A JLENS blimp that has been tethered at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland has broken free Wednesday and is being tracked by two fighter jets traveling over Pennsylvania at 16,000 feet, a NORAD spokesman said.

 

There are unconfirmed reports that the aircraft landed in Bloomsburg, Pa., but Fox News could not immediately confirm.

JLENS is short for Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor. The craft looks like a blimp, but the tether technically means it is an aerostat. The craft is the size of a football field and cost about $180 million each.

 

The Baltimore Sun reported that the helium-filled blimp detached at about 11:54 a.m. and was pulling about 6,700 feet of cable. The paper reported that the military is working with the FAA to maintain air safety. The Air Force said two F-16 fighter jets from Atlantic City are monitoring the blimp.

 

The blimp is apparently dragging roughly 6,700 feet of cable along with it.

 

To be honest, this is just hilarious. I hope nothing bad happens with it (like it crashes into someones house or something), but I still can't help but get a good laugh out of it. I'm not sure if this really qualifies as Tech News, but I remember it being posted about on here when they were originally announced.

How does something like that break free if the people were doing their jobs right? Time to fire some people, maybe. This could have crashed and destroyed something, or worse, hurt someone.

Apparently not. It's just an equipment platform that floats around on the end of a cable. Your avatar is an appropriate response lol

Wait... So it has detached from the cable? How did it not rise up to space and blow up yet? Too heavy?

It still has about a mile of cable hanging from it. The cable apparently snapped.

don't think so, atleast on the picture i don;t see any control mechanisms (motors, props, rudders and the likes)

 

it would be pretty hilarious if it would keep rising until it bursts :D

Well one of them has broken free.

 

 

The blimp is apparently dragging roughly 6,700 feet of cable along with it.

 

To be honest, this is just hilarious. I hope nothing bad happens with it (like it crashes into someones house or something), but I still can't help but get a good laugh out of it. I'm not sure if this really qualifies as Tech News, but I remember it being posted about on here when they were originally announced.

Wait, did I miss something in science class? It wouldn't float up through the atmosphere until it reached space or popped, it would rise until it was neutrally buoyant and then stay there until something caused it to pop or it was no longer buoyant and started to sink. That's what's done with weather balloons.

OT: Geez, have these people never heard the phrase measure twice cut once? Especially with $180million spy blimps. Someone is definitely getting fired over this.

Oh this reminds me of the olden days of aviation...

 

I live near an area that used to house a bunch of blimps... Some of the stories (including one of a blimp that got loose and decided it was time for a holiday) are just hilarious.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.
