Caffeine, the first DX12 game

With Caffeine's v110 patch it has became the first ever game released that supports DirectX 12, with the developer claiming that the new API will deliver a 20% performance boost when compared to DirectX 11.

This game was developed using the Unreal Engine 4 and was developed by a single man team

two months and we have the very 1st DX12 game, an actual release

only if things will go further and adoption of DX12 API will grow - we can only hope

meh, looks like unreal engine, is unreal engine, not that impressive.

TBH I don't see anything in that linked video that would give you increased performance with DX12.  Nothing in it looked like it would be draw-call limited, so there must be something else happening with the patch as well other than just DX12 support.

 

 

 

So, does vram really stack in sli on DX12? I'm still waiting for the answer.

 

That is up to the developers to implement, not AMD/NVIDIA.

not until the games and drivers support it

so basically no

maybe in 3 or 5 years that will change but dont get your hopes up

That is up to the developers to implement, not AMD/NVIDIA.

 

Are you sure? How do you know?

DX12 has the ability of using multiple gpu for different purposes, so yes vram can stack and one gpu can be used to do different rendering task that the other, it can also be used with integrated graphics like Intel HD and AMD APU's to improve performance.

 

OFC all of this must be coded by developers.

It was a limitation of DX11 and the rendering techniques that worked which needed both frame buffers to have the same data.  With DX12 that software limitation is lifted, and it's on the developers to enable such a feature.  I read a release by Nvidia some time ago, and some discussion on here as well for this feature.

DX12 does more than just increase drawcalls (which you no doubt know already)

 

No doubt likely some CPU optimizations (The Patch or DX12?, who knows)  happening to balance core usage and in turn = better performance with more cores lightening the load across them...possibly.

Whoever decides to use DX12. The more info the better IMO.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Dude no, the UE4 experimental DX12 is nothing and its bad(it just proves it works) i downloaded samples of scenes running DX12 UE4 and it had worse performance than DX11 same sample.

Plus that scene in the video cannot take advantage of DX12 because it doesnt push the draw calls, using experimental/incomplete DX12 right now in such a game is silly.

 

They need scenes like those in strategy Total War series with hundrets/or thousands of troops on screen or huge cities with many pedestrians/cars/objects etc like GTA 5, in order to see performance benefits.

 

So dont get too excited, it will be a long time before they optimize DX12 game engines's enough to outperform DX11 in such simple scenes, a corridor or a simple room.

The Steam reviews are "Mostly Negative" and once reading them, for good reason.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P

Congrats to him I guess. An UE4 game on DX12, he did what Ark tried and failed to do.
