Press Release: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/hp-news/press-release.html?id=2098626#.VheegTahe8E

15.6" 1366x768 Glossy TN "why do you even exist" screen (upgradable to 1080p IPS)

GTX 950M

Up to 2TB Hard Disk + 128GB SSD

16GB RAM

Core i5 / i7 Skylake (note sure if ULV)

Starting at $899 USD.

HP is a giant Laptop manufacturer, however nobody has ever really looked to them for gaming laptops. I know they announced the "HP Omen" last year, however I don't think that was much of a success. I'm not really sure a mid range video card paired with a 1366x768 TN screen that belongs on a $300 laptop helps this perception. Also, I have one question...

cc5cf9e96f.jpg

WHAT ARE THOSE!?

Seriously though... it's like the worst of Razer and HP design combined.

I need more SSDs.

inb4 the cooling on it is absolute trash. The Omen will literally heat up until failure and it is HP's top of the line product. I doubt this one will fare much better.

STOP 1366 x 768 !

768p on 15" = 104 ppi

1080p on 21" = 104 ppi

1440p on 27" = 108ppi

and 768p is perfectly suited the GPU for playing gamses, since it wont be running games at 1080p it means sharper gaming without interpolation

I think this laptop is perfectly fine for its price, its a good balance of specs suited to its target market, and appropriate for its hardware and performance, and should be good for people wanting a bit of gaming oomph on something budget

Also there is a 1080p option if the person wants it for browsing and other purposes

If it was 13" I would understand, but I think 1080p should be the minimum for 15".

there is a 1080p option, but a 950m sucks at 1080p so 768p is a better option for gaming, and honestly its just easier on the eyes

its just as sharp as 1080p on a normal 21" monitor

950M and gaming? no.

950m is fine for 768p

MGS V = 60fps

Mad Max 65fps

Witcher 3 = 36fps

GTA V = 64fps

Hardline = 74FPS

And see my post above, it hits 60fps in most AAA titles at 1366x768

it can, but just not very good.. maybe on a crappy 768p screen... (that is way too small for anything (i know because i have a macbook air with that res))

Well, the 950m might not be the best, but its no slouch either. Also it has a 768p display(1080p optional), so it will be able to drive the display just fine(sacrifices might be made with the 1080p display, depending on the title). 768p is fine as far as resolution is concerned, using it on a 14" display(latitude e6420) to type right now. Its a $900(MSRP) machine, you get what you pay for(and TBH the specs are good for the price). You could spend $1.5-3K on a machine that has a better GPU(screen, etc), but then you are spending more.

The thing with 1366x768 Glossy TN screens is that they just suck. Like, almost all 1366x768 TN screens are designed specifically for very low budget laptops and as a result are literally the worse TN screens you can get.

If we look at reviews for the Pavilion 15 (non-gaming), which presumably has the same LCD panel, we see the viewing angles really, really suck.

The problem now is not that it's TN - there are decent TN screens out there. It's that on a $900 laptop they've chosen a bottom of the barrel TN screen, not at least a "better" TN screen, if that makes sense.

I need more SSDs.

Fuck no, it probably has the same cooler on my Pavilion which caused my APU to idle at 80-90C.

Why the fuck does it have the exact same panel as my 2010 Pavilion DV6 3010AX (which was upgraded to the Phenom II N970)?

Better question than why 1366x768 isn't dead yet: why is TN not dead yet? Especially on laptops?

I have an older laptop with a apu/dual graphics that's 768p it was about $800 CAN 3(4 maybe) years ago. If its the same kind of thing with updated hardware it won't be bad at all.
