exactly my point. there's really no other reason for this threads existence, beyond retaliation from people that bought into false hype.

its not really retaliation ( at least coming from me ). I was and still i am, defending the OP's initial statement, since everyone was just bashing on it without actually knowing that his statement was true , "if you overclock, the 980 will beat it "

 

I dont hate the Nano and i hope it does well, competition between both companies just brings lower prices and we end up "winning" in the end.

 

And theres no problem with threads like this, its depends on your point of view, you could either learn a thing or 2, or dont give a crap and move on, debating and sharing each others opinions is part of growing.

The 980 is just a regular graphic card, with a short life span. Once Pascal is released, it will be the next kepler with limited driver support. Overclocking is only useful if you need more FPS, but it doesn't help bad drivers.

Em dude in Jayztwocent's video ( dunno if you saw it ) its both stock and oc for both cards.

 

You are correct, Jay's video had performed tests for both the cards at stock and overclocked.

Keep in mind, the GTX 980 is not a regular "reference" GTX 980 -- it is a EVGA GTX 980 Classified. I am not saying you are wrong, bit something to consider, and keep in mind.

The 980 is just a regular graphic card, with a short life span. Once Pascal is released, it will be the next kepler with limited driver support. Overclocking is only useful if you need more FPS, but it doesn't help bad drivers.

I wouldnt say short, I'll give it 2~3 years ( since the majority of gamers use 1080p or lower ) before a change. Well look at Linus video about drivers ( Nvidia, hopefully we see a video about AMD ) across the years, the fps kept on going up until they reached a plateu then kinda flip flopped.

Sorry and yes totally agree, there will more heat dumped into your room and other components, if you live in a hot/warm region it will be hell if you dont have AC, so yes thats a trade off you gotta have in mind when overclocking.

 

Yes its a Classified and a Hybrid which a sorta "cherry-picked" like the G1, but then again dunno if its true and dont take my word for it but the general consensus is that the Nano is a cherry-picked core, so they're sorta in the same level of "cherry-picked"ness for that video.

Yes, just how Maxwell were able to pack such a performance with such a little tdp compared to previous generations etc ( back en 2014 ). Innovation is great for both companies and the real winners in the end are the consumers.

 

Oh dude that was spot on. I am frustrated with the fact that Maxwell doesnt support async compute, but that was just 1 benchmark and hopefully by the time DX12 ( dont really care about VR ) goes "mainstream" ill get another gpu or something ( thats how i try to make myself feel better ).

 

After learning that Nvidia gave up compute power for the high power/fps efficiency in Maxwell, I wouldn't call that innovation. They simply made a card that was a perfect fit for normal users.

Yes, the Op didn't express his/her ideas in the correct way but the statement I was focusing on was "if you oc the 980 it beats the nano etc" and well it does.

No, it does not kill it. It beats it by a little bit at 4K, but does not kill it, especially at this price point.

 

I wouldn't really say "a little bit at 4k", considering the card reliably outperforms the 980 at 1080p, anywhere from 2-10 fps depending on the game.

 

At 1440p and 4k it is ahead by quite a large amount, and it is very reasonable to expect someone to be using at least a 1440p monitor if they are going to buy a card like this. If you so choose the Nano can also be overclocked to near Fury X levels of performance as well, but then you lose the power use advantage it has.

not bashing amd coz i got fury (non-x) myself. But why the hell would it cost that much? personally i am not interested in small size cards, and i dont know anyone who considers size of a videocard as factor when buying one. 650$ is way off imo

I honestly don't believe AMD really intended this as a product they expect to sell a lot but rather a proof of concept. The existence of these cards is going to create a demand for extremely small cases which will then result in a supply of them to make these things a lot more mainstream in future gens.

It's a fully featured core in an extremely compact form factor. That stuff is expensive.

R9 NANO competes with the GTX 970 ITX and is much faster, however more cost too.

I think the R9 Nano is adorable and seems awesome but in my "case"(did you see what I did there? xD) the R9 Fury X is the better choice cause my cases has alot of room for longer GPUs... :P (The fact that the Fury Nano has more shaders and stuff over the regular Fury makes it a nice card indeed!)

The performance, cooling and tdp of this card isn't disappointing, it's about what was expected, maybe even slightly better.

The only disappointment is the price, but that's because it has no real competition for its niche.

The performance, cooling and tdp of this card isn't disappointing, it's about what was expected, maybe even slightly better.

The only disappointment is the price, but that's because it has no real competition for its niche.

Yeah I kinda wish it cost a bit more than 970-ITX from ASUS lol but then it would been silly cheap! xD

Well the 970 itx is ok for 1080p. The Nano is more for 1440p and 4k.

 

The hefty price in part is due to the fact this card has HBM Vram and its pretty impressive cooling design, which AMD designed and manufactured themselves. It features a vapor chamber and despite the Nvidia fanboy OP's claim that it runs hot, it actually runs remarkably cool for such a powerful little card that features only one fan.

 

Ive also seen it overclocked a decent amount in another review and it still maintained good temps(which is more than you can say for the 980 ti).

 

I wonder if the OP has bitched about the 980 TIs 86-88C load temps, 105C vram temps and thermal throttling?

You can't deny that going with an open air cooler vs.  a blower was pretty dumb considering the kind of cases this thing was built for.
