AMD discrete GPU market share eroded to less than 20 per cent

Mads-Ejnar

Sad News :/
AMD GPU market share is going down under 20% :(

I really hope it will go up to 50/50 so we all will get better GPU's so both Nvidia and AMD is force to make the best of the best.
Now Nvidia have little reason to make the best of the best they can do because they basically have no competition :/

Nvidia hasn't for years now.. This is nothing new.

I now and that's sad.

I really hope that the X390 and Fury good help AMD. Have to wait to Q3 and see but don't think so.

The main reasons for this? Marketing, Larger RnD budget on Nvidia's side, and lack of public knowledge. Currently (Excluding the 980Ti/Fury X) AMD has a stronger offering at every price point. More performance, more VRAM, for largely the same price. They also have 'inbetween' options such as the Fury and R9 390X. High AMD temperatures are pretty much a thing of the past; it all depends on the cooler, with even the cheapest R9 390 (PCS+) getting less than 70C under load. Although AMD does use more power, this rarely matters unless doing crossfire/SLI setups (which are usually best avoided), and at the R7 370/750Ti, where the 750Ti needs no 6-Pin connector. AMD also has most of the features and softawre Nvidia has, with the main difference being Shield Streaming.

However, Nvidia has better marketing/agreements with Pre-Built companies, as well as the money to develop a new architecture every generation. Also if someone goes onto a tech forum such as this, where most people are tech enthusiasts, Nvidia is also proclaimed better because of the better 980Ti high-end enthusiast option.

I would like to see that, too.

I would even like to see a a 70% market share for AMD, just so NVidia burns some resources.

But that won't happen. AMD has now a chance with HBM2, because they have acces to it much earlier than NVidia.

Still I think that NVidia will find a way with Pascal to destroy absolutly everything we have seen so far.

they can do because they basically have no competition :/

This scares me, because if this happens we may have... GTX 950 = 299$.

And they can do it because you are forced to pay that much if there's no competiton.

if AMD goes out of business, which will probably not happen as they will likely get saved by a buyout but still, Nvidia would be forced by laws to split into 2 companies.

It seems to be very much due to agreements with prebuilt pc companies, and advertising ( with fanboys being spawned everywhere )

The 970 is still selling despite the 390 / 290 prices :/

also interesting that they have 25% of cpu's ( on pc's with steam ) http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

'(excluding the 980Ti/Fury X)'. I think you missed the news about the 750Ti being slower than the 370, the 960 being slower than the 380, the 970 being slower than the 390, and the 980 being marginally faster than the 390X for $100 more.

yes they would - were Nvidia to be the only discrete GPU manufacturer anti-monopoly laws would kick in forcing them to split the company and get a lot of law suits headed their way.

On reason i think nvidia is selling better is Nvidia Gameworks.
More and more games are using it. And if you are out looking for new GPU and there is a new game you will play that use Gameworks, why not get a Nvidia GPU?
I also every time i get new GPU look for the game makers from the games i play and see if they work with AMD or Nvidia. And then i buy GPU from that info and every time have been Nvidia so far.

The only Nvidia cards that are not obsolete to a well informed buyer are the 750Ti with no PCIe power connectors needed, and the 980Ti with better performance for the moeny.

Or they will give AMD some money so they will live and Nvidia is not force to split?

No they wouldn't be because someone else buying up AMD (inevitable) still leaves AMD on the playing field.

Once dx12 games start comming out, AMD's cards should be competitive again. Its a long shot though

The result of propaganda, fanboys and vendor lock in. This is a really scary perspective for consumers, who well get worse products, less options and higher prices, if this continues.

I do however see AMD get markshare back once DX12 starts to take over, and probably Vulkan too. After all when NVidia has to lie to defend their poor DX12 performance, you know it's bad: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/432063-first-directx-12-game-benchmarked-update-1-nvidia-claims-debunked/
