Samsung's 16TB datacenter SSD

Looks like their VNAND is definitely getting them somewhere. 16 terabytes of storage in a 2.5" form factor of any kind is already very impressive, considering mechanical drives just recently reached 3TB of storage in 2.5" form factor.

 

 

Samsung's earlier 48-layer VNAND announcement was exciting, but we already knew about it going into the keynote. What we did not know was that Samsung was going to blew the doors off of their keynote when they dropped this little gem. It's not just the largest capacity SSD, as this thing is more dense than any HDD's available today as well. That's 16TB of 48-layer TLC VNAND packed into a 2.5" form factor SAS-connected SSD.

Yup, that's 48 of those new SSDs, making for a capacity of 768TB in a 2U chassis. Samsung described this as a "JBOF" (Just a Bunch Of Flash), so processing the 2 million IOPS this array is capable of will have to be left to the connected system.
 
No word on pricing, but I'd think we are in 'mortgage the house' territory if you want to put this into your home PC.

Of course these SSD's are for datacenters which means they're a lot more durable than your average budget SSD right now.

 

But this only shows that in about 2 years, HDD's will be out of the market.

Ok, SSD capacity and MTBF has surpased that of HDD (however, some will be from an exceptionally good batch, and last for years or even decades past their average lifespan), but look at the bloody price...all that really needs to happen now is for it to go down (and being able to recover data is a moot point to me as I'm used to losing it all the time, so I've got the important stuff backed up on disc).

Honestly I can't help but see that flash storage is the future. It's density is just growing so much more quickly then mechanical drives now. As OP said and from what I can dig up, the largest capacity 2.5" mechanical drive is a 3TB Toshiba drive, just released at the beginning of the year. 16TB SSDs for the mainstream market seem very unreasonable for the next while, but this paves the way for consumer-available SSDs soon to come that will match if not surpass the capacities of consumer-available mechanical drives.

I disagree completely. Flash memory is going to be phased out before too long.

RRAM, or something similar will be needed.

They should stop researching how to make SSDs have more capacity and start focusing on how to reduce the price tag on them. Having more storage doesn't make it any more appealing if the cost is still so much greater than the equivalent HDD.

This is exactly what the companies are doing.  They are researching how to fit more storage in smaller/single chips.  This decreases cost, by increasing capacity per chip, so they need less chips for equal size.  So, they are already doing exactly what you want.
