Most of you are missing the REAL reason they are swapping. IBM computers are now enterprise only services. Enterprise customers of HPC (you might call it big data) ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY USE UNIX.

So instead of having a fractured ecosystem where they have to have both Unix (Linux and iOS) and Windows computers (and corresponding IT people for both) they can move to a unified platform.

Furthermore almost no one builds regular hardware for Unix devices outside of Apple which means even if some of those devices will actually run Debian or Ubuntu (which I can personally guarantee you will be the case) they are almost stuck with Apple (few large companies are receptive to shipping and supporting large Unix rollouts).

This isn't Mac vs Windows. This is Mac vs everything Linux (which isn't a fair fight for everything else considering there is no big name out there seriously).

This move makes perfect sense considering IBM has finally without a shadow of doubt given up in the consumer marketplace.

Btw, terminal requirements for enterprise are the ONLY reason I am using os x (on a Mac mini eww) for work, and I hate every moment of it.

As a user of both Windows and Mac OS, i have to say i much prefer Mac OS X (Mountain Lion, not a fan of Yosemite); those who have never used Mac OS for an extended period of time, not just once, then you cannot be negative about it until you have. 

 

Going from Windows to Mac OS is certainly different, and so most people give up with it, but if you stick with it and get used to it it's a baller of an operating system.

most hpc is Linux based so having a machine that out the box that is Unix based is a good idea

To be fair, malware isn't much of an issue for a reasonably responsible user of a modern fully patched Windows system. That's not the most significant selling point of a Mac laptop though, when I went with the Air 13' there simply wasn't anything comparable in its class in terms of the actual specs: second-to-none trackpad, 10+ hour battery life, all in its compact form factor. More intangibles like in-person support at an Apple Store for the lifetime of the computer, guaranteed software compatibility, security, etc. were just icing on top. *dons flamesuit*

Laughing gif aside, the current XPS 13 was not out when I needed a laptop. It's the first laptop I've recommended to a friend that wasn't the 13' Air or Pro. It comes seriously close, if not exceeding, any Apple offering. Still I played around with it after he got it from a local MS store, and the trackpad - one's *primary* point of interaction with a laptop computer - still falls short of those in an Apple. The glass one in the Dell is great and all that, but the way Windows handles tracking, momentum scrolling, and multi-finger gestures doesn't hold a candle to OSX.

I'm just saying that it's one of the main features osx has to offer. That's just basically what most mac users want. A system that works and that doesn't have to be scanned for malware over and over again.

Not really... Owning a macbook air myself, what I think it offers that no Windows laptop can match is the perfect software for the hardware. I mean for the trackpad alone, I would pick a Macbook over any other Windows laptop any day of the week. It is so good, that sometimes I plug my mouse off to use it, since the gestures really make everything a lot faster. Also the software is not just secure, it is also rock solid. I never had the whole thing crash on me, maybe an app or two here and there, but never a bsod-like experience :P

I gotta say, after owning an MPBr 13 2015 for about 3 months now, I really do not regret my purchase at all. Get's the job done with out being annoying 99.9% of the time. For work its absolutely perfect, as there is nothing to keep you from getting your job done.

I'm surprised other laptop makers don't just pay Apple for the trackpads. I mean come on, swallow your pride! If there is anything Apple has mastered and perfected in laptops, it's the trackpad. No one sane and in the know on this planet can deny that.

I mean if the selling point to a $1,000+ laptop is the trackpad by all means go for it. On the other hand you could just use one of these (like most people do anyways with all laptops)

Well even then you can just put the mouse on the side of the computer or just use the trackpad as it can't be so bad that it is un usable except if it is broken

Most of you are missing the REAL reason they are swapping. IBM computers are now enterprise only services. Enterprise customers of HPC (you might call it big data) ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY USE UNIX.

So instead of having a fractured ecosystem where they have to have both Unix (Linux and iOS) and Windows computers (and corresponding IT people for both) they can move to a unified platform.

Furthermore almost no one builds regular hardware for Unix devices outside of Apple which means even if some of those devices will actually run Debian or Ubuntu (which I can personally guarantee you will be the case) they are almost stuck with Apple (few large companies are receptive to shipping and supporting large Unix rollouts).

This isn't Mac vs Windows. This is Mac vs everything Linux (which isn't a fair fight for everything else considering there is no big name out there seriously).

This move makes perfect sense considering IBM has finally without a shadow of doubt given up in the consumer marketplace.

Btw, terminal requirements for enterprise are the ONLY reason I am using os x (on a Mac mini eww) for work, and I hate every moment of it.

The terminal in various Linux distros is the same as whats used in OSX-right down to the commands......

I mean if the selling point to a $1,000+ laptop is the trackpad by all means go for it. On the other hand you could just use one of these (like most people do anyways with all laptops)

And then you have a glorified underpowered desktop strapped onto a battery. The point of the LAPtop is to be able to use it on your lap(or bed or any other place you cannot use the desktop for that matter).

I'm surprised other laptop makers don't just pay Apple for the trackpads. I mean come on, swallow your pride! If there is anything Apple has mastered and perfected in laptops, it's the trackpad. No one sane and in the know on this planet can deny that.

Exactly! But on the other hand, if they do that, then consumers lose most of the incentive to buy a macbook... Besides, it is not just the hardware, as I have tried using Windows on it with bootcamp and I still didn't like the way the touchpad felt. It is either that the drivers are not up to par, or Microsoft really needs to work on their touchpad API...

There is 3rd party software to help you adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad. It's a bit annoying though as it requires a weekly update (really a reinstall of the newest version since patching isn't supported). The terminal in various Linux distros is the same as whats used in OSX-right down to the commands......

 

Obviously. Unix.... But no IT group want's to deal with Linux distributions. Also even if I straight out will claim that Windows obliterates OS X in functionality (minus unix terminal) and program compatibility, OS X walks over Linux like Lance Armstrong walks over cancer...
