IBM allegedly buying 150k-200k MacBooks for its employees

While IBM used to be known as one of Windows biggest partners, it seems they plan to put upto 75% of their 380'000 people strong workforce on Macs instead of Lenovo Thinkpads. 

 

Google is solely using Mac and Linux aswell, is Windows gonna lose the enterprise sector now?

 

 

IBM is rapidly advancing its plans to replace its Windows-based systems with Macs. This information comes in the wake of an internal memo, leaked in May, that outlined plans to buy and deploy 50,000 MacBooks by the end of 2015.

It now appears even that number was low. An internal video, leaked on YouTube, shows Jeff Smith – IBM’s Chief Information Officer – speaking about the company’s intentions to rapidly leap from Windows to the Mac.

The video details Smith’s conversation with Apple head-hanchos. “I’d really like to break a log-jam here,” he recalls saying. “I’d like to be able to offer these to everyone who can use it. We’ve got to find a way to make the overall cost the same or lower to PCs to make that happen.”

Apple’s representatives apparently balked at the mention of lowering costs at first, according to Smith, but became more interested when Smith indicated IBM could buy up to 200,000 MacBooks a year – ten times the volume of Apple’s largest corporate customer.

This is totally not good for mac users. If many large businesses start using OSX more and more hackers will create malicious software for Apple's os.

My guess is longevity. I know my university only buys iMacs for the PC rooms / gives Macbooks to the PhD students as the maintenance is much lower and the laptops last a lot longer than Windows based ones.

Well considering IBM with OS/2 got shafted by Microsoft with their shittier Windows 3.1 (you could run multiple instances of MS DOS and Windows 3.1 inside OS/2 for example, you couldn't do that with Win 3.1-and OS/2 had a far better GUI), I can understand why they'd rather use an Apple computer (but I hope its not the 2015 Macbook-that thing is straight up ridiculous).

Oh no!! WHAT WILL WE DOO!! It isn't like Windows users have had to deal with it for 30 years now

I'm just saying that it's one of the main features osx has to offer. That's just basically what most mac users want. A system that works and that doesn't have to be scanned for malware over and over again.

OSX is far more stable than Windows and has overall less issues with it. Apart from it not being open source and lacking some program support I see OSX as a very good and preferred alternative to Windows.

You have to consider that maintaining 150k-200k laptops costs a lot aswell and if IBM buy Macs that are usually lower in maintenance costs and consider that IBM is not going to pay 2000$ / MBP it's not that much more expensive if at all. Thinkpads are really expensive aswell. I got a MBPr 2015 as it was 400$ cheaper than a similarly speced Thinkpad x260

Well considering IBM with OS/2 got shafted by Microsoft with their shittier Windows 3.1 (you could run multiple instances of MS DOS and Windows 3.1 inside OS/2 for example, you couldn't do that with Win 3.1-and OS/2 had a far better GUI), I can understand why they'd rather use an Apple computer (but I hope its not the 2015 Macbook-that thing is straight up ridiculous).

Windows was the dominant OS for all of those years don't forget, so IBM didn't have much choice. Now that OSX has taken off quite well IBM has a viable alternative. And you'd be surprised at how bitter some companies can remain after a long period of time.

Windows was the dominant OS for all of those years don't forget, so IBM didn't have much choice. Now that OSX has taken off quite well IBM has a viable alternative. And you'd be surprised at how bitter some companies can remain after a long period of time.

 

I know a few people working at Google. And they said there is either Thinkpads running Goobuntu or MBPr15 to chose from, as they say the maintenance and security costs of Windows are way too high.

That is another thing, IBM wants a reliable and secure OS. Which describes OSX as well as Linux and IBM's old OS/2, but never Windows.

My guess is longevity. I know my university only buys iMacs for the PC rooms / gives Macbooks to the PhD students as the maintenance is much lower and the laptops last a lot longer than Windows based ones.

hmmm...iwonder since windows upgrades are now free, if that will change anything.

I don't think so, and considering they got thinkpads and mbpr the cost about the same. (And while my big PC is running Win10EduN (same as enterprise all spying deleted / turned off) Win's user experience / usability is objectively seen horrible).
