Tell me why everyone is so concerned about being monitored (read OP!)

kaylexmorgana

So it is obvious that big companies like Microshit are monitoring everyone and all that and people are going apeshit which is understandable. HOWEVER, tell me why?

Is it something besides privacy?

The bigger reason you would care more if you have something..... to HIDE that would get you in trouble..... Most likely being.... illegal. Not just pirating since no one gives a shit about that.

The argument that "if you have nothing to hide, why would you care?" is complete bullshit. On that logic, you should let the police just walk into your house on a weekly basis and turn it upside down searching for anything illegal because you don't have anything to hide!

It's the principle behind it and what it can lead to in the future.

well we may not need the privacy but people who are whistle blowers and stuff do need the privacy. also as edward snowden says you may not need privacy now but you dont know when you are going to need it. for example what if you found out that the CIA is planning to try to mind control everyone but you get arrested because microsoft is monitoring your data and sending it to the NSA

btw its not as far fetched as you think https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_MKUltra

Probably something along the lines of this quote when you are talking about the issue as it relates to government:

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—

and there was no one left to speak for me."

It's about the scary potential there is for people to be profiled based on any arbitrary affiliation they may have and targeted in any number of ways. As far as companies, people are mostly just mad that they are forced to have their privacy compromized for the profit of a company I think.

Pretty much this. It isn't because we all have something to hide, it is because people don't want all their info absorbed and plastered all over the internet; possibly having negative consequences against our will. And we, as consumers and voters, have the power to change the ways privacy is handled.

Remember, we (speaking for the USA here) don't just have the right to free speech and freedom of expression, we have the right to not be affected by other peoples free speech and free expression.

I don't think I will get in trouble if microshit sees me looking at porno so I shouldn't care as much? But the people beating off to CP DO have something to hide is what I am talking about.

For me it's a principal thing.  I have nothing remotely illegal on my machines and I'm happy to share my nudes with anyone since I'm an exhibitionist.

All that aside, it's a slippery slope for the powers that be to start down, and we don't need to go down it.

Edit:  I think the better question is why would someone NOT be concerned.

I understand what you mean but the police searching house is not only an inconvenient but destructive to the property. Storing your usage data is neither of those.

My only problem with tracking is if the company or government is using my data for 'evil' or are selling the information to others.

Am I missing something?

Like (I believe it was) Snowden said, saying that you don't need privacy because you have nothing to hide is the same as saying you shouldn't have the right to speak because you have nothing to say.

Ugh that whole nothing to hide argument. My issue with internet surveillance is it's done with out the user knowing they're being watched and that it can be used maliciously.

It's also not very considerate to spy on your own people.

My computer, my stuff, my privacy.

I'm sure you wouldn't like any stranger just to mess around with your computer, right?

I'm worried that any personal information, even if it's completely normal and legal, could be used against me. I'm not completely paranoid about it because I doubt anyone cares what I do, but anything they might get to know about me now by chance could become a pain in the ass in the future if someone wants to damage me and gets a hold of it. Aside from my interest & such, there are things like my address, my credit card number and other things that could be dangerous in someone else's hands.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Privacy is a basic right, being monitored makes ppl uncomfortable as the whole principle on freedom is to have privacy I don't want corporations knowing about my personal life

NO, the biggest reason isn't hide illegal activity or something you don't want others to see. The cause is that it is wrong for people to spy on you and can (and definitely is) be malicious (think of the NSA spying on people they deemed fit a "terrorist" theme).

It is privacy, and everyone deserves it unmolested. And anyone who doesn't care about privacy and sanctity of it needs to get off this planet.

physically. obviously

When I say I have nothing to hide, I mean I have nothing to hide.

The problem lies with what is done with the data that is being gathered. If Google wants to track my browser habits and improve their services, I'm all for it. There's a reason why Google's services are so good.

If my data is gathered with nefarious intent, like the NSA wanting to know what porn I watch so they can use that info to blackmail me later for some reason.

Much like the gun debate, eliminating something won't make things better. A middle ground is a must.

how exactly will someone "blackmail" you? we'll show your parents that you look at porn if you don't do this.....? lmfao
