AMD Fiji Officially Revealed at Computex; First Clear Pictures of GPU Core Emerge and New Teaser for Upcoming GPU

First clear picture of AMD's new Fiji GPU core with HMB memory onboard:

It is now confirmed that Fiji has 4 stacks of High-Bandwidth-Memory, clearly pointing towards 4GB configuration. It is also confirmed that my mockup was an awesome job (yay me!). Hardware.fr crew spent some time asking question whether the 4GB limit will affect the performance in anyway, but of course no concrete answer was be provided. The CTO of AMD Joe Macri said this is not a problem and engineers are already figuring out how to optimize the memory usage.

I’m just wondering why are they not showing the actual card. We know that Fiji silicon is great achievement and it’s quire possibly the most advanced GPU in the history (HBM is a huge milestone), but people like me are more interested in pure specs, solid numbers and how many slots I need in my rig to make it run.

AMD Fiji, also known as Radeon R9 Fury will arrive on June 16th, so you better start looking for your piggy banks..

yeah but thats a lot of heat coming from that chip cooling will be really hard (as shown in leaked cooler photos)

Would dual interposer not mean 8 hi hi stacks? As in 4 stack on top of 4 stack? I believe hat is what dual interposer is on their 8GB HBM cards.

Why would you think it would have dual tonga? the card with HBM was always going to have a Fiji gpu. and the only cards with tonga this generation has been known to be the 380(x).

Saw on guru3d preview that the release is being delayed because AMD is still trying to make the card faster than the 980ti...

Guess all the hopes of Fiji being the Nvidia killer were over hyped...

Either way, that's a 750 dollar card. AMD can't afford not to charge a premium. They kinda need the money to pay off their huge payments that are now coming up.

I hope AMD had fun running as a charity and pandering to fans, now they need to run a business and make money.

I'm also tired of all this pandering. Just release the damn card already. You're already a year behind and having magical HBM isn't going to right the ship overnight.

as far as I know even with dual interposer you would need 4 more stacks of HBM to achieve 8 GB.

Looks pretty much in line with Pascal that Nvidia showed last year.
GPU's will be much smaller now without all the memory around chips being around the GPU which is awesome for smaller builds.

AMD's CTO, Joe Macri, explained the 4GB limitation to Ars in a telephone call:

"You're not limited in this world to any number of stacks, but from a capacity point of view, this generation-one HBM, each DRAM is a two-gigabit DRAM, so yeah, if you have four stacks you're limited to four gigabytes. You could build things with more stacks, you could build things with less stacks. Capacity of the frame buffer is just one of our concerns. There are many things you can do to utilise that capacity better. So if you have four stacks you're limited to four [gigabytes], but we don't really view that as a performance limitation from an AMD perspective."

"If you actually look at frame buffers and how efficient they are and how efficient the drivers are at managing capacities across the resolutions, you'll find that there's a lot that can be done. We do not see 4GB as a limitation that would cause performance bottlenecks. We just need to do a better job managing the capacities. We were getting free capacity, because with [GDDR5] in order to get more bandwidth we needed to make the memory system wider, so the capacities were increasing. As engineers, we always focus on where the bottleneck is. If you're getting capacity, you don't put as much effort into better utilising that capacity. 4GB is more than sufficient. We've had to go do a little bit of investment in order to better utilise the frame buffer, but we're not really seeing a frame buffer capacity [problem]. You'll be blown away by how much [capacity] is wasted."

 

AMD wouldn't need to say all of that if they found a way around it, now would they?
