id wait a tad for AMD, the hbm thing might really be a 4k killer..

This, and it's CrossFire with AMD cards, not SLI @Shepard.ash

hbm mean faster memory, not faster cores.

The titan x afaik is not limited through it's memory.

though if the 980Ti will be a Titan X with 6GB Ram, it might be the better alternative.

Yes anyways 2 x's cost pretty much..

Oh my bad @Tedster

It's fine. Quoting is usually the way to go. I was going to tell you to follow your topics by pressing the button called 'follow this topic' at the top-right, but I forgot.

Probably, considering a single Titan X can max out games at 4K 60fps.

2x980's can't do that, so a Titan X will never be able to do that.

You haven't seen the benchmarking videos have you. (Also, 4GB vRAM is not enough for 4K)

They currently are overkill, but that's not even the real problem; that would be their price.  An r9 295x2 is plenty for 4k gaming, and it costs as much as a single 980 (which by the way, is NOT enough for ultra). If you can wait, that's always a good idea. If you can't, get an r9 295x2 and upgrade in 2-3 years.

Show me a single game benchmark at 4K max where the Titan X performs at 60fps minimum?  Here, let me help you with review links.

Have a field day proving me wrong.  Titan X isn't as powerful as you think it is, considering 4k is FOUR times the amount of pixels of a 1080p panel.

You can't go overkill for 4K, because approaching 4K gaming is a feat in and of itself. The Titan X (single card) will perform admirably at 4K, albeit with tuned-down settings. 35-55FPS in Shadow of Mordor in medium-high, for example. With the rate we're approaching mainstream 4K gaming, it's not worth it to invest in SLi or CFX to achieve it, as a single card will likely handle 4K gaming by itself in a year or two, depending on how well AMD and NVIDIA optimize ahead.

I would seriously wait for AMD.

Wait and see how HBM performs.

If you can not wait then only i would get the titan x's

No no no, you said TWO 980s can't do it. Let's not start revising your own statements to turn it around. 2 980s are MORE than enough for ultra 4k gaming.

I'm playing GTA V on all high settings with a 2gb 770! 4k isn't as hard to drive as people think.

adding loads of AA and post processing is what hammers the gpus performance and isn't needed for 4k. if someone can tell the difference between 2x AA and 16x AA on a 4k monitor you've got better vision than my current 18/20!!

a single titan x is enough to play all well optimised games at 4k ultra without silly levels of AA ect.

2 is overkill from the cost to performance ratio.

I'd hold out till the 989ti or 390x and see how well they perform and consider sli/cfx them. thats what I'm doing.

if you want it now get a 295x2 and then maybe add a single 290x if things get a but more demanding.

They should be fine

But go for 2 980's or wait for AMD R9 390/X to come out, two TiX's are a waste if dual 980's can do it better :)
