Anyway wildly non-technical so I will end this here.

Isn't that what we're all about though?  :P

My life is consumed by CS:GO, even though I'm not exceptionally good at it.

The club turned out to be just a way to screw some unlucky kids out of $35 to sit in the library on slow macbooks using Codecademy, a free site

Why did they have to pay??

Back in October of this year, I pitched the idea of a student-run coding class as an afterschool activity.  If you've read any of my previous stories you'd know that most of my school's IT team and "tech squad" are idiots who think they know everything because they can click on safari and go to google.com.  Naturally, they took over this club and I was their "technology assistant" which meant I could sit down doing nothing, maybe helping the odd kid here and there, while they checked their emails.  The club turned out to be just a way to screw some unlucky kids out of $35 to sit in the library on slow macbooks using Codecademy, a free site.  Anyways one instance of idiocy was when one of the IT guys was showing a video about coding and it's importance.  The video was made by the creator of Scratch so it was full of scratch clips and projects.  After the video the IT guy said "So, you see, coding is all about creating things from scratch".  It's as if he was purposely TRYING to confuse the kids!  They had no idea what scratch was and I had to tell them what it was after he confused them sufficiently.  Another instance is when our lord and saviour GabeN was in a video telling about the importance of code and someone said "Wow I bet he does a lot of code he's so fat".  I simply put my head down and reflected upon how poorly educated this generation is.  One final example is on the first day, we had just started after getting everyone set up with accounts, and about five minutes in one kid started bashing the table with his fist and calling for help.  I came over to him and tried to hold in a laugh as I saw what he had written.  Instead of reading the instructions or the introduction (he was in the basic HTML and CSS course), he deleted the code that was there when you load the lesson and had written in it's place:

hack

minecraft

hack

pornhub

hack

getfreeminecraftcodes

free/minecraft+codes

///free

hack

Yep.  I just about died when I saw that.  Also sorry for the wall of text, thanks to those who read it all!  :D

That made me cringe.

So say we all. I'm fourteen, doing the build in my siggy very slowly, get the same thing all the fucking time. Kids are underrated. We do great things daily. As underdeveloped as we are, we still can out think every other species on this planet. You'd think the adults would learn from when they were kids. Although, in the adults DEFENSE, if we think of them as kids who have been around longer, isn't it time they got their opinions heard, not just ignored like when they were our age? Maybe we need to all just need to disregard age completely, in terms of intelligence. Kids are just little adults and adults are just old kids. Sometimes someone who does not match your age group will know more than you. I do hate being ignored because of age though.

This is a great quote. I'm 14 too.

It feels like I'm smarter than the management at my school...at least in how to deal with kids. They just don't know what they're doing anymore and they're punishing people for things that they a) didn't do and b) there's no proof that any particular person could've done it.

Sig under construction.

Not in this thread, BB is techy I am (somewhat) techy  , hence we don't really belong in a thread about experiences with NON-techies.

This almost gave me an aneurysm watching. This kid clearly has no idea what he's talking about, plus the level of mic breathing is over 9000

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

Good news.  While going into my school after running the mile in PE, I overheard someone actually talking about computer hardware.  I have restored my faith in humanity now.

Nobody in my school knows what I know. I mean nobody. When I talk about PC hardware, they are like, wut DA fuq did he just say?

I thought I had some money... Oh wait... I spent it all ;(

SBAC, they think we are too dumb to even turn on a computer let alone take a test on one. We had to watch a god awful presentation on how to use a calculator.

Oh, Jesus Christ. My school want that bad. Except for now we have to restart our computers after using them since most people don't get how to log out. We did have to take practice tests on how to interface with the SBAC system though. Because, woah, you need to click the next button to continue. Also, IMO flag for review was totally unnecessary. Just made peeps nervous for no reason.

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

I'll be posting some funny calls I get on this more often, only posted one so far!

Not the best experience but it made me laugh!

Customer phoned up about 10 minutes ago stating her VPN doesn't work in the location she is in. I remote onto the server with all the VPN tokens to see if she is locked out and then she turns around and says: "No, it is not my VPN, it is something else that you can't sort out, you need to log and assign it to the other team"..

Well, thankyou for telling me how to do my job! haha, it made me chuckle a bit

I'm going to put a link to my PC specs which actually aren't my PC specs and I cry myself to sleep everyday so I can have these PC specs but I can't afford these PC specs so PC specs PC specs PC specs PC specs PC specs PC specs.

I finally got my grandpa to use google chrome. He still calls his monitor his "computer", and his computer his "hard drive"

My mom used to say something like that, but only about ITX or smaller PCs. She used to say that she liked those small computers that are only the "CPU". She said that for around 3-5 years until I corrected her lol

Edit so I don't have to double post: I remember one of my brothers worked for a local computer store (which I thought was stupid because he's not one of us). Anyway, I think like a week or so after he started working, he said the job was too hard. I asked him why, and he replied "I was told to replace the RAM, but then I said "Um, what's the RAM?" After I heard that, I internally facepalmed.

So my mom went and put SafeEyes (computer monitoring software) on my computer which blocked shit and limited my usage of the machine. Well I wasn't too happy about this, so I broke the software and rather than trying to fix it, she actually uninstalled it (you need a special code and account info which I could not get) so I hope that she did not try to put it back on, but I think she will. In order to counteract this, I'm going to install a keylogger on my pc to get her account info when she signs in!

My parents did a similar thing a couple of years back when i was in 6th form, they were worried i was spending too much time gaming online, so they put in a blocker that shut the internet connection off at 10PM every night, it was controlled through their computer downstairs, so i simply went downstairs at night and logged into the software, the security question was "dogs name" which i knew (obviously) so i just changed it so it never went off.... to this day they probably still think my internet shuts off at 10.

I remember that for the longest time, we had "Windows Live Family Safety" on our computer. I never got around it, I always had to ask my dad to change permissions.

This happened a couple of days ago.

A client called saying their bank website had kicked em because they had a virus. I wanted to start a remote session to do the standard cleanup and boy was that a hurdle.

During the conversation that ensued in an attempt to start the session, the follow bits of info was said: (blue=me, red=her)

  • What web browser are you using? Google
  • Okay, [this is out of context so don't jump to conclusions readers...] lets try Internet Explorer. I don't like using that one because it got a virus last week.
  • Lets use that one [iE] anyway. [i tell her the website to go to]. There's a message coming up [reads out error about Firefox being redirected to an untrusted site. Said error message includes the word Firefox].
  • Okay since that isn't working I'm going to send you a Dropbox link, I'll need you to download and run the file. I have the link and I've clicked download but I nothing comes up after. Okay can you go to your Download folder and take a look? Where's that?

It was about 30 minutes and I'd given up. Was only when I suggested she send the laptop in to us that she got her younger, less tech-stupid colleague to get her sorted.

She only stopped a week before because she thought it was infected.

Was it infected? I bet it was a popup that said, "Your browser $unknownBrowser is infected!"

Pardon my opinion, but this mindless bashing of IE is a little tiring. For earlier installments of IE (8 or older) this is understandable, but current version of IE is actually not bad. It's about as fast as Chrome now, and doesn't hog as much RAM as Chrome, it's just bashed because of what IE used to be.

Despite all this, I personally still prefer Chrome over IE. It has just grown on me.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

No clue. I never opened IE when I got on the computer. That said when I was downloading Malwarebytes through Ninite (I couldn't access the Malwarebytes website because I was being redirected by a virus) on FF, I saw a popup add saying something about Russian prostitutes. Haven't seen a popup like that in years.

Lack of good extension/plugin support, less stable and more likely to have compatibility issues. In fact, even the 365 control panel works better on FF than IE.
