Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

So your motherboard is Sonic the Hedgehog?  ?

Fast boot is effectively your Storage Drive resuming from Hibernation.... That's practically it. And FYI, i'm pretty sure most motherboards allow you to customize how long the BIOS message shows up for.

So is fast boost safe to enable or bad?

I thought I'd heard that hibernation can have problems sometimes.  Though I could be wrong.

And then there's Australia. Where ISPs take an off-the-shelf modem/router combo that's really good and load their own restricted firmware onto it.

As of right now, Telstra (the biggest AND crappiest ISP in Australia) is just awful.

There's an interface in the routers gateway for Port Forwarding, where you can enter ranges, but it does not actually do any port forwarding. It just sits there, claiming it is. (Telstra have claimed that this is deliberate, and don't plan to "fix" it anytime soon)

UPNP only works half the time.

NAT-PMP doesn't work (RIP online Ubisoft games)

Not to mention that the router itself freezes up every day and a half or so, requiring a reset.

Oh, and QoS isn't a thing either, so good luck trying to play any online game while someone else is watching Netflix.

As of right now, my house gets about 5mbps down and 0.5mbps up on a good day. For the privilege of such atrocious speeds, we pay $120 per month (USD$90)

So you can imagine why the whole of Australia hates our ISPs with a burning passion.

TLDR: If you believe an internet connection that works is sort of necessary in this day and age, don't come to Australia.

Telia is such a dick with speeds, i think we are paying for 30/5 but we are getting like 19/1 and thats to the modem, i have seen it go over 16mbit down ONCE EVER on my PC(which i also have trololololoely set as way higher priority then everything else on the network because i can) and that was when i was home alone, my phone was dead and noone my PC was the only thing on the network... not to mention all the drop outs and inconsistent upload speeds, i stoped my streaming because 1mbit was enough but it would keep dropping bellow that and it made the stream lag out and shit -_- support is horribe and if you call them they know nothing and say that eveything is working as it should at the speeds they sell. the best support is the forums which are just people complaining, and trying random shit untill something happens to work and then Telia resets the router a week later and what they did is undone and everyhing breaks again, im also pretty sure they are responsible for taking down my webserver i had on my rPI...

So I started working at the library recently (two months ago) as patron tech support, meaning that I help people with random issues they have with our public-use computers and book check-in/out systems.

I have witnessed:

  • A lady sending ~15 copies of an 8-page email about cats to our print server
  • A number of people who literally took the book's barcode and rubbed it against the touchscreen check-out station, when there's a laser right below it?!?
  • Someone on the computer literally screaming "BUS DIRECTIONS" at the computer expecting it to load the city's transit website...
  • A person tried to fix a paper jam on our printer. By taking out all the paper and expecting it to print again.

So, I sold my HTPC off to my dad and I'm going to be swapping parts from his computer into it.  Reason being is I have an Amazon Fire Stick+better side comptuer+PSTV hooked up to my plasma.

I told him that I just need swap the processor and his HDD.

Him, "Not right now I'm scared my files will be lost."

Me, "I'll back them up before I do it."

Him, "That scares me.  I don't want to lose my files."

Me, "That's why I'm backing them up first."

Him, "Please not till tomorrow."

Me, "Ya, well tomorrow I don't even know if I have time I told you I'm going to be really busy tomorrow."

Him, "I don't care. Do it Monday."

Me, "Ya, well I have a lot to do as I'm leaving for weeks."

Like, I'm moving out to the upstate for college.  He's acting like magic fairies will destroy all traces of his data if I swap the HDD between computers.  Even if I back up his data.  The sad thing is this is not the first time I've done this, and he knows that.  I really wish I had techie parents instead of near deaf hippies focused on psychology.  e.e To make it worse he asked me to back up his data.  I really don't think he knows how this works, and I get crap for explaining it to him.  I mean I have a computer science associate degree.  I think I know what I'm doing as I'm also a seasoned builder too.  Oh, and he also said that he's afraid of learning how a new keyboard works.  He literally thinks a new keyboard will kill all of his data. xD  I mean there's paranoid and then there's that.

I have a sorta techie parent and I'm thankful for that; this is how I got into computers/gaming as a whole.

But then again.. If you have techie parents.. Rip ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Heh glad that's not true for me.

Well, my adoptive mother was more of a techie actually.  However, my adoptive father was more into psychology and music and really weird hippie stuff.   My adoptive mother worked for the coast guard doing tech work for them then she worked for a security sw firm.  Then because I kept getting in trouble at school for not taking shit from criminal students...she switched to desktop publishing and tech stuff for a landscaping company.  I just died of laughter when he was accusing keyboards of data destruction and over complicating things.  He literally went apeshit over keyboards.  His exact words, "And, I don't have time to learn new buttons on a keyboard!  I don't want the keyboard deleting my data!"  <.<The sad part is that I'm just selling him the system...he's using his same keyboard.

My mother is like your father but she doesn't have a computer. My father was just really interested into computers back In the 80188 days and he still is.

Sadly my fucking mom threw away almost all of his CPU/GPU boxes but we still have a MMX, i5 760 and i7 3770k box, and hopefully a Q6600 box still.
