Experiences with non-techies

At this point I feel like the bios is what's bottlenecking boot times, not the SSD xD. Seriously, on my desktop most of the time I'm waiting for it to boot up is when it's still in the bios :P. It takes about 15 seconds until the little loading circle appears and within about 2-3 seconds it gets to my login screen, then after I login it only takes around 2 seconds to get to my desktop.

People freak out about getting nvme drives and 960 pros as well as 3D optane, but for anything the average user does SATA SSDs are fine. You need to be doing large file transfers to actually get much of a performance boost out of nvme.

for me its my typing speed

i cannot type 'wordhereandthere_numbershere82739487'  instantly

give me three seconds or so.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

The bios does seem to take longer than I'd think it needs to while booting up.  But I'm just guessing I have no factual basis for this.

I think something might be odd about my computer.  I just looked in the task manager startup tab and look what it shows for the last bios time.  ?

Yes they are.  ?

Ahy idea why it's showing such a messed up long bios time?

I know it didn't take thousands of seconds on the bios or during the entire bootup process.

Would that help?

I'm on the F7 version for my motherboard but I just checked and there is an F8 version.

The computer seems to run fine so I'm in no hurry to update but I should eventually.

Telling IT support that I could wipe the schools main Active Directory server in under 5 mins because they left the hostname, admin username and admin password on a post-it note, as well as how to connect up to it via Remote Desktop Connection.

DON'T DO THIS KIDS! EVER.

The funny thing about our AD servers is that they run other services as well which they are named for so trying to figure out primary plus backups would be quite a task for someone. Honestly though, is it that hard to remember the credentials? If you RD frequently enough, then even remembering the IPs becomes extremely easy.

Also I do not miss my old laptop taking so long to boot up and be ready to use.

My current desktop has a Samsung 850 PRO for the boot drive and it is fully booted up and ready to use in about 30 seconds.  ?

my PC boots up in four seconds ^~^

Not super hard to get set off on, as it's fairly easy to see how they made this mistake, but i saw a kid walk into the store i got my PC from thinking VRMs and VRAM were the same thing. :P

You'll excuse me I hope if I don't believe that it could be that fast.  ?

"Nondescript service"?  That sounds shady.  >_>  ?

You don't need a password that long to be secure.  Something far shorter so long as it's properly structured will stump even the best computer for so many years that you'll be dead and gone for a very long time.

You just need a pass phrase made up of a handful of words at most with at least one space between each word and including a few capital letters as well as at least one number and symbol each somewhere in there.  The capital letters, number(s) and symbol(s) can be anywhere within it that you feel like.    Pretty much the only thing you defintely want to avoid are words that are easy to guess or find out that relate to you.  So a pass phrase made up of all the names of your pets would be bad.  Using the last names of some of your friends would also be unwise.

You'd be surprised how much more secure even just using spaces in a password or phrase makes it.

My Pro 4 turns on in less than 10 seconds. 4 Seconds could be achieved with a 950 Pro  if you wanted.

ok yeah windows, that takes a bit longer, but my manjaro install boots in four seconds. xD

my password for e621 is 17 character and is in 1337sp34k. thats my only shady site account. :P

the 200+ character is really just a self challenge.

I know i'd be fine with a 40 or so character password, but i get a strong coating of nerd pride when people start giving me weird looks when we all log in and i'm typing away for a whole minute. lol

I really need to try Linux someday.  What about that version of it appeals to you?

Idk what e621 is but ok I believe you.  ?

I'd love to ask what password could be so long and yet you're able to remember it but that would defeat the point of having a secure password.  ?

Though for that matter I'm curious why you named one of your poor computers what would translate as something to the effect of "Awww stupid."  ?

Nope. It startups fast because it uses an NVMe SSD. Tablets traditionally use eMMC (Same storage type as phones)

Elementary OS is quite nice but there are some quirks if you like to play games. Namely the nvidia graphics drivers.

Manjaro is more targeted at having a large amount of customization and being able to change a ridiculous amount of things.

One time I straight up asked someone what the password was for their computer whilst they were using some engineering machinery. :P
